Okay it’s not a MacBook Pro, but B&H Photo has a pretty sweet deal on the 14-inch iBook G4 - $699.95 + Free Shipping. Too bad this deal didn’t come out a few days earlier. This would have made a killer Mother’s Day present… ;-)
B&H Photo - 14-inch Apple iBook G4 1.42 GHz Notebook w/ 60GB HD, 512MB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon 9550 display card, SuperDrive, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Airport Extreme, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard & 8x DVD burner only $699.95 + Free Shipping (Posted on 5/9/08 and Expires on 5/14/08)

Hmm, if I didn’t detest apples so much I might think that was a sweet deal, but as it is I try my hardest not to touch apples. The reason for this is because about 4 years ago I had to use them in a class. Now this wouldn’t have been so bad if the Apple OS of the time hadn’t SUCKED! It took IT until the second to last week of a one year class to figure out how to switch it to Dvorak!!!! Aside from that, you couldn’t use any common hotkeys or right click! And to think that the Menu bar was OUTSIDE the window and the Minimize, Restore/Maximize, and Close buttons were not only on the Wrong Side, they were Flipped Backwards!!
Have fun with your macs, you’ll all just stuck in your ways of … …
Its so bad I’m not even going to say it.

It’s not worth dropping cash on any PowerPC-based Macs anymore in my opinion - the 2.1GHz MacBook available on the Apple refurb store for $949 would provide a lot more bang for the buck.

Lol. The 12” iBook G4 would make my Mum a nice present. (On ebay that are like 300Euros) Or even an iBook G3. These now days are best kept in schools or in hands of children…. Even though I am one lets just say for those under 12. (Guess why) Cough12ChokingCoughCoughCough.
–Back On Topic—-
It does seems a nice present but 700$ is like 400Euros and they are like 5 years old.

Sweet deal, Chris! I really really really really just wished that you had posted this earlier though. My friend bought an Apple iBook the other day, and it was basically the same machine as this one but more expensive. Oh well, that is the way things go. I’m not in the market for a Mac, but I’ll spread the word about your coupon. Thanks again!

Wait, I just remembered. My mom’s iBook G3’s battery just went dead, and it’s power input works intermittently. I think this might actually be a perfect computer for her. No joke. Thanks Chris! Then again….I wouldn’t have to buy this computer if I won the Dragon…….just kidding! I don’t want to get myself disqualified! Thanks Chris, I’ll have my mom take a look at this.

Probably another dumb question…
But I was wondering, do Mac computers still boast the ability to run windows software? I know they used to do so when I was in college, but that was many years ago. So I thought it best to ask.

thanks chris, don’t know if i’ll be checking that out, to me that’s still pretty expensive for 512mb of ram and 1.2ghz but i still would like to own a mac at any cost but i would rather get a new one though. k chris. thanks.

I’m sorry, but I just won’t use a processor that has really no support anymore. Well, I mean after Apple dropped it, I really did not hear much of it afterwards. So I think I’ll save my money for an Intel Mac.

That could be a pretty good computer for parents who just word process. I’d give them two gigs of ram and upgrade the hard drive and they’d be set!

I just bought my sister a iBook G4 just like this for 350$ So i think its a little to much for this older ibook G4. But yes it would be a good mothers day present!
With it only having 512Mb of ram is not much, i had to upgrade my sisters to 1.5GB to make leopard run smooth. If any body gets it all it takes is a DDR 333 SO-DIMM and the max it allows is a 1GB stick which i got at Microcenter for 60$ so i only spent 410$ total on hers.

this is cool and all…but the Macbook starting price is only like $300 more, well if you have a school discount. Then you get 2.1 GHz Intel Core Duo w/120GB HD, 1GB RAM, Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor with 144MB of DDR2 SDRAM, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR,iSight, AirPort Extreme (802.11n), FireWire 400 port, Mini-DVI video out, etc. All that for a base model MB for only 300 more? I think I would just rather wait and pay the extra for the better one.

That is a good deal, but if you can keep an eye out on the Apple Store Special Deals section (bottom left hand side), white MacBooks will sometimes pop up there for $799-$849. Yes it’s $100-$150 more but the difference in the machines is well worth it. You probably will have to pay tax but they all have free shipping and full year warranty from Apple.

Wow! I haven’t seen an Apple laptop that cheap in a long long time. You even get a printer! Lexmark Z1420 Inkjet, not the best, but hey if it’s free sell it on Ebay, unless it’s the Dragon HDX in which case you keep it forever and ever! Anyway I wonder how easy it is to upgrade an Apple laptop… I’ve never had the pleasure of owning a Mac but this might just be the way. Thanks Chris!

That’s what I don’t like! Why do Apple computers have to have such high resale value? That’s what makes it a tough choice to get a used one, or since you already paying alot, just buy a new one.

That is not a bad price for any notebook of that speed/size range. I would enjoy picking that up. Comparable price with standard pc of the same specs…but that looks much sleeker…

Your right Chris this would be a killer mothers day present only if I had 700 dollars lying around the house. One problem the the G4 is that not as many apps are universal a la silverlight and after the next version of OS X G4’s will not be supported. But still its a great deal.

Aren’t the prices of old electronics supposed to go down? I once saw a new iBook for $499 at Fry’s two years ago. Back then, I didn’t even know what a Mac was. (:

I just don’t get the MAC I have always used a windows machine. What are the benefits of owning a mac over a Windows based PC for the every day PC user? All I have herd is that there is a lot of compatibility problems. Are there really that many compatibility issues? But the people that do own a mac love them. Well I will probably never buy one.

I’m not an Apple and Macintosh guy. I prefer Linux and XP Pro. Though I do own an iPod and am fairly happy with that. Had one before and it broke on me, but at the time as far as portable mp3 players went iPod was the one to get. Since then I have been a fan. So I would pass on this deal and look elsewhere.

I bought my Infinity Beta 50 Floorstanding Speakers from B&H Photo and they were awesome. I saved $400.00 bucks and the shipping was quick and free. I would definitely recommend them to anyone here if they’re unfamiliar with the company. B&H Photo offers eBay prices with the reliability and no hassle of a respectable vendor.

Sounds like a good deal. But I am not in the market to get a new laptop. I am actually buying parts too build my new gaming rig. And and something in my mind says that that thing isn’t going to play crisis very good. And when ever I do decide to buy a laptop. It will most likely be a top of the line Macbook Pro.

What was really interesting after I clicked for more details about this product you’ve recommended us was its OS. That’s true scalability for the MAC OS X, while let’s take for example Vista’s case - the new operating sys from Microsoft won’t work with most of the old machines with decent specs.
I’ve read the other day that Windows 7 will focus on reducing the hardware requirements and improve memory usage. That’ll be wonderful!

This truly is an incredible deal. If all someone needs is a computer for basic tasks, such as surfing the web, email, etc., this would be a perfect system. I’ve heard of B&H before, but I’ve never personally done business with them.

I love Mac computers, but right now i think that Vista SP1 is much better than OS X, for various reasons, included but not limited to stability and compatibility with programs, plus OS X is secure, but Windows can have AV programs and the new Windows Firewall is extremely effective for most average users (unless you like to venture beyond casual use, i.e. PearPC and using Mac OS X inside your PC or Flyakite OSX, one of the worst virus/spyware programs ever made)

Well for me it is a good deal but for other kind of people but for me, in my personal opinion iam going for the macbook pro, i dont like so much power pc’s so i just say that the macbook is more bang for the buck, because it offers more options and features.
Conclution: for other people good deal; for me, i buy a macbook pro or a normal macbook.

It’s good, but too bad it only has a 60 GB hard drive; my standards are around 100 to 120 GB of HD space or higher because I like to make and edit videos and it uses a lot of hard drive space.

For $700 bucks you can get a better laptop. The one thing that keeps me from getting this laptop is that it is running a PowerPC chip. While developers are usually writing in Universal Binary for Macs, the GHz itself isn’t up to snuff. For double the price, still not a bad price, you can go to MacMall.com and get an entry level MacBook that will last a lot longer.

The computer needs a bigger hard drive but this is very good for the less tech-savvy family members who just want to get their hands into the Mac OS.

That being said MAC’s are great computers. But they seem to be expensive at times. But you get what you pay for :)

it would be a good deal for a few years ago. But now, the power pcs are kinda outdated so if I was going to get a mac, I would just go all out on a MBP or just a mac pro. Still a fairly decent deal, but nah nah chief, not this time.

Well i don’t go out to buy computer that often, i mainly buy a computer when my old one dies or malfunction a lot.
700 bux is really low but you can get a better machine but for a little more money you can get better machine and bigger screen 14′ sounds a bit too small for me, although on second thought other laptops are not that bigger they are like 15′ or 17′, not that big difference, considering that i don’t have a laptop then the iBook is a good recommendation + i would experience a new OS, i have only used windows but i’m open for new experiences the one that close minded may miss out at good stuff that windows don’t offer.thx for a good idea.

While it appears to be a good deal…and it may be. I’d rather lean towards a higher priced, current offering from Mac for my own usage. However, if I had the cash, this would do nicely for my Mother or Wife…hmmm…

Awesome… I’ve been wanting to get my mom a new laptop for awhile, she’s got an old Sony Vaio that is getting a bit long in the tooth. I think this would be a good choice for her and the price is good. I may want to get one for myself too since I have yet to play around with Leopard. I mostly use Vista and Ubuntu right now… I have to use Vista because I love my games, but for everything else, I think a Mac would fit the bill quiet nicely.

Wow! I do not remember the iBooks having a 1.4 GHz processor. This is actually a pretty good deal. It would be an update to my current machine (iMac G4 800 MHz). However, considering I could get a new Intel-based MacBook for only $400 more, I think I will just stick with the MacBook.
Is this thing refurbished?

Um, considering the iBook has been discontinued and made obsolete by the MB and MBP, it is still a good deal but, it just doesn’t have the specs that SOME people really aim for. Most folks wouldn’t complain though.
As for mother’s day..I picked up a MB for $1,099 at a certain electronics store. The same place Chris got the two Video iPods.

Great machines those G4 Powerbooks. They were still using them when I left school, until they were upgraded to MacBooks. Wasn’t anything wrong with them. Some were starting to show age issues, but on the whole they were okay. Plus, introducing the MacBook brought around the added problem of, what do you do with kids and Laptops with Cameras. I think they found some kind of work around to disable them, but I suppose in the worst case scenario this could lead to potential online issues!
