You guys know about my two dogs, Wicket and Pixie. I took some pictures of them recently, and printed one in about a minute flat on the new printer sitting in my office. The quality was as good as the quality of the photo itself. The big deal would be that it was printed on a color jet printer. To be exact, I used the new Color LaserJet CM1312 from HP. I’m really excited about this machine, actually. HP sent this to me to review, and I don’t think I want to send it back.
I’ve been using HP Laser Jet printers for years, going way back to the days before USB. Over the years, features and functions have grown. I’ve always been sold on the concept of an all-in-one device. Thus, I jumped at the opportunity to review this machine… and it’s been a great experience. This is the first color laser jet printer that I’ve had in my home office. To tell you the truth, I can see it no other way at this point.
This thing is as Uber as these types of peripherals get. It can fax, it can scan, copy and print. It doesn’t just print in black.. it prints in perfect color. I can’t get over how fast it printed these pictures. It’s just insane. I printed high-quality photos in LESS THAN A MINUTE!! Featuring newly formulated HP ColorSphere toner, the HP Color LaserJet CM1312 MFP produces print-shop quality documents with a wider range of colors, higher gloss and improved photo resolutions to help micro and small businesses who need to take their business documents to the next level.

I am starting to think that the printer should die. More and more I am using my jail-broken iphone to view documents. Printing photos also i think is something of the past with a great photo album on one iphone and on a digital picture-frame. I still have a printer but it is used on extremely rare occasions and that is only if I need to copy something. I think printing should go the way of the dodo (like fax was) and we should embrace new tech.

Looks like you spent those $500 dollars well Chris. Those look like very good, highly quality photos even while seeing them through a monitor so I imagine how well they look in person. It certainly can do a lot, from printing to scanning and faxing and it does them in color, thats a great All in One printer. Anybody who has a business and is looking for a new printer should take a look at this one. And its only $500 dollars. If I owned a business I would take a look at this CM1312.

Chris, just buy yourself one! I know laser printers are faster than inkjets, but what’s slower than an inkjet? Try printing a photograph on a plotter. Yes, I have done this. No, you should not do this.

Wow! 44 seconds by my count to print a full page image, that is unbelievable! This printer looks like it’s worth every penny. I have an HP Photosmart printer and it takes like 4-7 minutes to print a high-quality full size photo. The only two down sides to this printer are that it’s big and the toner is expensive. But I do think it’ll pay for itself in the long run. $200 for the toner but 2200 black prints and 1400 color prints if the chatters were correct. I need a new printer so this one might be it.

Wow. Insanely good picture quality but $500 is a heck of a lot. Especially when you consider Apple throws in a free HP inkjet of reasonable quality with most of their computers…You get what you pay for though, as Chris has said many times.

Im also using an HP printer. To be specific it´s the HP LaserJet 1018.
It´s not much of a printer, but it does the job we want it to do. Since I´m the computer guy in the family, it was me who installed it. It´s over a year now, so I can´t remember specifically how it was to install it. But I sure don´t remember having any kind of technically problems with it. Sometimes my Mom needs some help, but that´s only because she have a very little knowledge of computers.
The only thing missing now, is being able to print directly from the iPhone via Wi-Fi ;)

I have used HP Color LaserJet printers before and they are really good for the price. Toner itself can get expensive but that is the case for any printer. In face when I consult with a client that is looking to buy any kind of printer, I also look at the current cost of ink/toner for the model that they are looking to buy.
Related specifically to all-in-one printer/copier/fax/scanners. I normally recommend that clients don’t buy these and the main reason is because that if one portion of it breaks, and the rest of it is SOL. In fact, for this reason, I don’t recommend any all-in-one kind of unit (e.g. home theater in a box).

That looks like a really nice printer. I think it was cool how when you put the memory card in the slot on the printer that over the network Aperture on your Mac started. I think that that could be really useful, but it might become annoying after a while, when you just want to print a picture, but a photo editing app. starts up and you don’t want to edit a photo, you just want to print it. Also I was in your chat, and watching your live stream. How could it take you that long to record a video. I would of just left one go, even of you weren’t feeling it, or just forget about doing the review on the priter.

Grandmaster P,
I used to work a job at mortgage company where all I did for two years was print closing packages using an HP laserjet printer — so you might say I’m a bit familiar.
(By the way, when I say that’s all I did there, I mean that’s ALL I did there. I could have probably just put a monkey in my chair and no one would have noticed).
That said, while I haven’t kept up with printers in recent years, I think I was most impressed by the price of this particular unit. Back when I was with the mortgage company, I was using a printer that cost over $2000. (Actually, I think it was closer to $3000).
So props to HP for keeping the price reasonable on this bad boy.
On a side note, I recently sent a photo to my sister to have it scanned. When she e-mailed me the image, there were white specs all over it from dust that was on the scanner before she placed the photo down. Hopefully these companies can find a way to take care of this problem in the near future. :OP
Chillin’ in the crib,
James Gia

Sounds like just the bit of hardware to get my own en devours off to a running start. Not to mention, with two girls in college, and my twelve year old son being home schooled, I can see a machine like this being an all around asset. My only question is this… should I look forward to the same problem I’ve had from other printer/fax models in the past, which is to say, going to the store in search of ink/toner only to discover that for what ever reason the one type I need is either out of stock, or worse, no longer being carried?

Good to hear that you like it! We just bought a new HP InkJet printer that does basically everything you mentioned as far as high quality printing, copying, and scanning. It has a nice little LCD screen which is great for maneuvering through copy and scan menus. The print quality is amazing as you said for yours. I think HP is becoming one of the better technology companies all around as far as computers and printing hardware goes.

Wow…I need a printer like this. I’m still a college student and always just take my files on my thumb drive to the computer labs. I looked at printers for a while but they are so expensive. Plus, most of the cheaper ones don’t come with both color and black. It’ll say “black sold separately” on the box. So really it’s just as expensive as some of the more expensive ones because you have to buy a 25.00 black ink cartridge. I don’t really fax though. If I fax, I go to like Staples. This thing seems intense. Wish I had one too. When your done reviewing…send it to me so I can too haha.

now that’s what i call a masterpiece with a boost!!!… high quality prints in less than a minute!!! but i think it’s too expensive compared to the ink jet prints. the printer is quite bulky but it satisfies the standards… well, that’s all i could say it’s hard to type when your two thumbs are up for this printer…

What timing! (Karma?)
Many moons ago, I bought an HP Business Inkjet 3000dtn for use in my home ofice. My children were going through high school and then I knew they would go to college. This printer is a high duty cycle printer and got a lot of use. The per page costs were really spectactular compared to other inkjets and color lasers.
I needed high duty cycle (both kids are art majors) with color.
I then went through several all-in-ones from Canon for my FAX machine and copier (plus they do a good job of printing photos). I currently have a Pixma MP830 which I love.
But, the 3000dtn is a HUGE printer. I included the 750 input tray on the bottom. This thing weighs, I don’t know, 300 pounds is my best guess.
I have been looking for an all-in-one to replace these two printers (which I will either sell or more likely give to some local charity to use since they are in great condition). The Color LaserJet CM1312 looks to be just the ticket with the right features and price point ($500!). The comsumables, per HPs site, are ~$70US for black (2200 pages) and ~$65US for the C, Y, and M cartriges (1400 pages). Nice.
I too have been very satisfied with HP printers over the years. I only went with Canon because HP inkjets have always been single cartridge, which is a waist of resources and my money.

these are really designed for commercial offices though right?
I thought that they are really expensive, i also have a HP, love it and i like what it can do, although it is only black and white laser-jet, it spews out pages and pages so quickly, i am amazed at how technology has advanced, it would be great if it were in color because i have seen them printing photos in school, and they look amazing, the only set back is the amount of pixels you have on your camera!!!

All in one devices may save space but they are not a good idea because if and when some function failes and has to be fixed you lose the other fuctions as well.

As an avid DSLR photographer I must say that the idea of lightning quick print times is very appealing to me. I can have someone over and show them a bunch of pictures from an event on my screen and now I can let them take a copy home, well that sounds about right if I had this printer, my current printer takes ages, I resort to putting the data on my flash drive and driving to wolf camera to print, I need one of these HPs. One quick question though, does anyone know what sizes can it enlarge to? I like printing up to 8 X 12 or even 14 by 11 if I can.

The HP Color LaserJet CM1312 MFP seems to me to be the tool of small business and doesn’t seem that useful to the home user, given its price. Of course I would probably agree with Chris and find it indispensables if I were to start using it or a similar model. The price point for me is too high though I have to admit that I would like to have a color laser printer. I really don’t have the need for that much color printing. All my b/w text is printed with a brothers laser printer and the color is done with a HP inkjet. The speed advantages of laser is clear but that only an issue when a large number of documents must be printed.

Chris,
That new printer is great! My friend has one and I have used it on occasion, and totally love it! I cannot believe how fast it printed that picture, Chris! I am truly amazed, but I guess I would expect nothing less from HP.
My family has tried many printers over the course of time, and we all agree that HP is the best. We had tried an Epson, and that thing for some reason just had so many problems with it so we switched to HP (the HP laserjet 3015 to be exact) and love it. It has a fax, scanner, copier, and of course a printer. Unfortunately it is not networked and has no flat-bed scanner, but it is still a great printer.
I love HP printers and would recommend one to anyone! Heck, I love HP products (especially that Dragon computer you are giving away — hint hint lol –)

I’ll have to agree in the All-In-One concept. My HP Photosmart can’t fax, something I wouldn’t use anyways. I love the fact that I can print, and fast.
All my life I have used HP products, even if it was software, but I just love HP(Just look at what they are giving out!). It has done a pretty good job on printers, thought I am a bit disappointed at their computer (no over clocking =( ). Wish they would allow it…
About that printer, it sounds like something good to have. Printer…Copier…Fax… thats a cool machine there.

Nice plug for a printer that’s not been released yet by HP. Also it’s more for the business user. That price you mentioned definitely came from a rep at HP since it’s not priced at their website. Also you should mention to the subscribers that it requires 4 cartridges priced at $65 for the CYM and $69 for black. That’s a lot of money for toners.

Wish I had 500 dollars to lay down for a printer, sadly I don’t and I’m stuck with this Dell All-in-one that came with the laptop I bought for college. Sadly the thing thanks longer to print that the HP there, and yet it still pumps out pictures with lower quality than what I see there. And if time is of essence that printer is awesome, grandparents need a picture? save time and money of having to run to a store to have it done, and print it right at home for a fraction of the time and money. Gotta love it

Well, that is a Pirillo thing, never happy the first time, the eternal perfectionist, well life isn’t simple and easy, well I’m not hardcore laserjet fan but that seems to be awesome machine.
i stumbled across a article, most of you might knew this a for longer time, laserjets leave almost invisible yellow dots on your paper and that can be used by the government to trace you, it is said that every printer is unique, the manufacturers puts secretly in serial in the yellow dots so it is easier to find someone, it is like a license-plate , don’t worry guys, the FEDS, Secret Service or who is in charge won’t hunt you down if you don’t do anything illegal, like making counterfeit money.

Sounds like a good printer. I don’t have a lot of money to afford a fancy thing like that, but I have used many printers over the years of many different brands. I like HP out of all of them like you say, I don’t have a all in one, but I just got the normal printer and I’ve always gone back to HP Printers. Thanks for the review didn’t know that there was Laser Color Printers out there yet :). I am still living in the ink cartridge days. Thanks for the review Chris Pirillo.

Very nice. I have some kind of laser printer… that’s all i know. lol. I haven’t tried high quality photo printing. We mostly use it for speed printing for printing a whole bunch of papers at once. It can do the actual printing for a black and white paper in about two seconds, color papers more like 5. but it does take a minute to process each document.

Ya but the only problem is most home users cant afford a printer like that. I agree that the HP Printers are great but they are also so expensive its not even funny (in most cases)
I use a Lexar printer and only print in black most of the time. If I need to print pictures I just goto the store and have them printed out for me. And thats not very often.

I have HP all-in-one (inkjet I forget which model number) which I use for Fax and scanning and occasionally color printing and HP Laserjet 1018 for balck & white printing, which is most of what I do. If I want exceptional color printing I have access to a professional level color laser printer, which I use on special occasions. . At work my HP laser printer has been at my desk for more than a dozen years, still works great and i will be sad when it goes to printer heaven. I envy you, Chris, having such a great printer. If I had an extra $500 and were a heavy duty user, I’d buy that printer in a flash.

I’m not really obsessed with printers. The one I have, an Epson Stylus Color 740, takes a while to get going, but it’s okay. Recently though, it printed out a sunflower and the coloring was wrong. The petals were whitish purple and the center was purple. But I think it’s just running out of ink.

hmmm, i can’t afford this. i have an old HP PSC1610 All In One. it isn’t a fax machine though. i haven’t used it for printing pictures other than id cards for my children. it serves a great purpose. i refill the ink at least 2 times before i buy new cartridges. anyways, does it print on front and back because if i do spend a large amount of money on a high quality printer i want to be abe to print on both sides. even the ink was expesive and it looked like you had to buy more than two cartridges, hmmmm. i guess i will keep a low budget printer forever for the kids and every day stuff but for pictures(if I ever had any), and for business, and the kids special projects use the high tech stuff. i am new to all of this computer stuff. and i really can’t believe that people are really into sooo much. i don’t understand all of it -but am trying.

I’m not going to lie, I just made sure I have 600 in the bank because I will be buying one of these. I love HP Printers. I have one now. It’s inkjet, and being the person I am, and a neat freak, I love to print cool things out and keep them around the house. I can’t wait until I order this and have it with me. It looks like a killer laserjet, and a cheap color laserjet at that! But, for the price, it is a KILLER deal! There is no doubting that! With the networking and all.. and a color laser printer at that… this could be worth (in other markets) well over 900. Crazy. But this printer is nice!

It’s only been within the last two years that I’ve convinced my parents to go with laser instead of ink. Since then, I found a relic: the HP LaserJet III and it still works like a charm. Although its only black and white, I love this printer because we’ve not run out of toner since we bought it and that was a year and a half ago. Granted, it’s not an all-in-one like my last printer was, but it does the job with no expensive ink cartridges. I’ll never go back if I can help it!

I think it’s fair to say that people can even be judgmental on a document according to its standard of print. I often submit typed work (projects, lab reports) and feel conscious about the quality of my print.
What do people think? Would the reader be less forgiving of a not-so-crisp document? If I could I’d laser printer everything. There nothing like sending or receiving a well constructed letter.

No Chris, this is HP’s Color LaserJet CM1312!!!!!!! (sorry had to do a Sparta joke)
We own an HP printer, not Laser though, but it’s got fax, scan, copy and printing, connected between my mother’s computer, and my computer. we don’t normally use it, cause the cost of Ink, but when I do use it, it gets the job done. ^_^

That printer is SO nice… We are actually getting one for my school. It’s a monster, but it works and it’s EXTREMELY fast. If price was not a factor, I would totally get one for my home office.

Personally i have a HP photo printer but i really dont like the way it prints my photos. I have tried tweaking the settings every which way but i cant get it to print good pictures. So i print my pictures at a camera store. I get excellent prints for only 10 cents.

Quality seems impecable though the price seems to be a bit pricey for the average user. I too have been using HP in recent years and have been very impressed. I would love to get my hands on that colour printer and see what that puppy can do for me!

I remember the days when printing a color picture would take 5 minutes and it would look like utter ****. Props to HP for making such good quality products!

When I am shopping for a printer, I do not really care about how fast it prints a photograph. I am more concerned about quality. I mean, I am sure this printer can print an amazing photograph in under a minute, but time alone does not entice me to purchase one printer of the other.
I currently own an HP Photosmart 2510 (not a laserjet) and it is very slow. However, the photograph quality is impeccable. Perhaps to I not care about speed because i do not print that many photographs at all (maybe 1 per week?). I mostly archive all of my photographs on my computer because printing them all would be very expensive.
This being said, I believe this printer is geared more toward businesses. Especially businesses that print their documents in color.

Wow that was amazing. the speed at which it printed that color picture is much faster than my printer. For $500, it’s a pretty good deal. Great review Chris.

HP Printers are great! I recently purchased an HP Photosmart C7200. It prints/scans/faxes and copies! It was really easy to set it up and get it printing wirelessly. So far I haven’t experienced any problems with it. HP rocks!

Laser Printer would be so cool, if they would not be all big and ugly. Actually Samsung has some cool products printers in a very nice design and they are very silent to.

Probably prerelease MSRP. I’d probably expect it to be a little over $300. And it’s an MFP. I’m pretty sure they have a color laserjet cp1210 fo
