Tom from England writes: “A lot of people at school in the morning arrive with their eyes half closed and are complaining of how miserable they are, so I made this top 5 list (not just for teenagers) about how to get the most out of sleep.”
- Stick to a schedule Make sure you go to bed and wake up at more or less the same time every day, even on weekends. This will prevent interference with your ‘biological clock’, and your body will thrive on its new sleeping routine. I may also note that you will rely less and less on alarm clocks.
- Sleep in darkness It may seem like common sense, but letting even a small amount of light into your room will severely disrupt you when you try to get to sleep. It is also good to know that when waking up in the morning, you should do so with bright lights… especially if you find it hard getting out of bed.
- Watch what you eat and drink Going to bed on a full stomach (or an empty one) is not good. If you are having a meal, wait at least 3 hours before you go to bed. This is because your body cannot digest food well when you are asleep. It’s also the same with tea or coffee, Coca Cola etc. Caffeine takes at least 8 hours to get out of your system and can keep you awake in bed.
- Sleep cool There is nothing worse than a hot bed. Open a window or use thinner sheets. You may feel you are lying in bed forever before you can get to sleep when your bed is like an oven.
- Get as much sleep as possible. Sleeping for short amounts of time, such as around 6 hours, can lead to stress. A good amount is around 8 hours.

Chris,
When do you go to sleep and how many hours do you get each night? From your twitter posts, it looks like you go to bed around 2 am and only sleep 5 hours.

Sleeping more than what is required is a really bad habit and this leads us to have a lot many problems in our body. This one of the biggest reason of gaining weight. We should improve our sleeping habits some that we can make ourselves healthy.

I was told that having a TV in your room is one of the worst things you can do while trying to fall asleep. For years I did this - listening to it as I fell asleep, but I found my quality of sleep was very low. I also heard that scientists have found that sounds you hear during sleep can raise your blood pressure up to 13% - even planes flying over your house could trigger it, so I’m not sleeping with my tv on anymore, lol.

You should also avoid smoking before you get to sleep. This is a bad habit, and it is hard to get to sleep after that.

Ugh i have so many things around my house to keep me up my built in clock is all messed up. i have found that the best way to get too sleep is leave the room your in that has all the stuff keeping you up and just relax in a room where you have nothing but peace and no noise only use sleeping pills if all else fails cause you can get addicted to them if you are not careful..

Hey Chris. I like this video. I actually now have made some changes in my sleep schedule. I always eat before I go to bed, not anymore and I sleep with my tv on, not anymore. My number 1 prob. I still can’t fix though, soda. I can’t seem to ditch the caffeine I guess. Well, no I take that back my number 1 prob. is the broken leg….can’t get comfortable no matter what. Maybe I should make some tips for getting a decent night’s rest with a broken leg. Anyways, really digged this simple video and digg your live chat also. Thank you for all the tips and advise. Nerdgirl is here forever! e-ya later!

There were some good tips i do agree i do get immuned to the sound of my alarm clock its pretty bad though. I try to adjust the sound as i can or i just ditch my alarm clock and use my phone. There are a lot of cool and weird alarm sounds for my phone and i usually get up feeling “What was that.”

ZZZZZzzzzzzz……….huh…ok i am awake and oh yeah…..i have to leave good comment for Chris about sleep tips.
Well since i was a little kid sleep has been my worst and best friend mainly becuase i had always trouble sleeping. but i found out that drinking water before i go to sleep has been the best thing for me. I agree on most most of the tips that where on your blog and video and i found them very useful. I sleep in complete darkness when i go to sleep and i sleep under my covers to boot ^_^ but that usually makes me fall asleep faster. Thanks Chris for the sleep tips and thx to the one who sent the tips into Chris.

These tips are good, but like for some reason, like i cannot sleep without a sound of a fan, or a tv is on. I guess sound when i’m tired helps me go to sleep better, because i tried sleeping one night without a fan or tv on, it took me nearly a hour and a half just to fall asleep. I know you may be saying, maybe your not tired, but i really needed the sleep, but i was not falling asleep. Alot of times in my family when they cook big meals, they can’t help but go to sleep because they’re too tired to even get up once they sit down after eating. But What i really need to work on is set a solid sleep time, i tend to fall asleep one night at 12AM and the next 4am, which is not good for the body, as i heard. But good tips and hope to read more good ones in the future.

One thing I do in the winter is turn the temperature down lower than usual before I go to sleep. Then I sleep with several blankets on around me like a cocoon. For me, sleeping that way is very relaxing and helps be get a good night sleep. The down side of that however is it is hard to get up in the morning.

Thanks Chris for sharing these tips, because I try to keep good sleeping habits, but sometimes it’s not that simple. These tips are gonna help me, especially the “light” tip. I got a little confused on the “drinking” tip, because the 2 top 5 list contradict themselves, but ill try both, and ill e-mail you to tell you which worked best.

These are good tips, I have been having little sleep now for the past week (4 to 5 hours a night) and its showing. It is mainly because of the hot room, and its been in the 60s at night time with no wind, so it was hard to keep cool. Not to mention the PC running all the time. I found if you are too hot in bed, is to get a window box air conditioner, a good one is around $99 and ive yet to install mine after the winter, but it works wonderfully in Summers, keeping your room to a crisp 66 degrees.
Would the caffeine apply to Diet Cola or not?

Well I guess I got owned there. I always eat and drink then go to bed about 5 minutes later, sleep with lights on, and never have a light on when I get up. These tips have made it easier for me to see what I have done wrong now and will try to correct this over a long period of time,

I just watched this and i totally agree with with all the tips but unfortunately i seem to break most of the tips my Body clock is on its last legs, i have atleast 3 alarm Clocks next to my bed but im the living dead so nothing works. My Average bed time has gone from about Midnight to nearly 4AM this is not good as i need to be awake the following day for 7:30am (which i am failing at badly). The ONLY effective method of waking up in the morning i have found yet, is a nice cool can of Redbull, the down side is i end up Hyper for the rest of the day.

Hide your alarm clock. Sometimes I have a tendency to keep looking at my alarm clock because I cant go to sleep. This only keeps me awake even longer. Also it helps if you have a comfortable bed.

I have so many problems sleeping… I can’t fall asleep without turning my TV on. Without the TV I usually lay there and suddenly my head explodes into a carnival and I can’t stop it. When I wake up in the morning I can’t get my day started without taking a shower, it just wakes me up. My number one problem sleeping though is trying to get away from chris’s stream.

I find some of the tips to be really good. When I feel really stressed out I find it good to sleep in the dark, and close my eyes. I also try to meditate when I can’t go to sleep. It makes me feel calm, and relaxed. If the bed feels to hard to sleep on, then use mattress pads to help give you support when you sleep. Thanks Tom.

I’ve been following pretty much the same sleep advice given to me by my doctor about a year ago to reduce stress and can say it has helped considerably.
I used to work overnights and the first, second and fourth points made here were emphasized by my doc when I was on that schedule with the first and last ones mixed.
Keeping a schedule that allowed a minimum of 8 hours sleep with my windows completely blacked out allowed me to get the relaxing sleep I needed to do my night job and reduced the stress working those odd hours created. Kind of glad It’s pretty quiet where I live.
I now work for myself but I still pretty much keep to a sleep schedule as I remember how terrible I felt when I slept whenever and was stressed out because of being tired all the time

hey chris great tips. I wish that i could folow these tips but i often find myself staying up to late and sleeping in to late. I often miss my ride to school because i sleep so late. I have found that if i rely on the snooz button everyday for a extended period time i become compltly dependent on it and it is torcohr to have to wake up any earlyer. So i recamend NEVER using the snooz and just getting up. Is it really worth 20 extra minutes when your just going to have to wake up anyway.

Also if you have to sleep during the day don’t sleep more then 1 hour. And sometimes if you are really off on your sleep schedule try and stay up for about 24 hours and go to bed around 8 or 9, Do this on the weekend, but don’t stay home! go out and do something to keep you awake.

Great Tips, I use to always never get any sleep thats because I would always play Xbox Live. Which would keep my brain active, so thankfully I’ve stopped. Also when I was younger I would always sneak a bowl of cereal before I went to bed which kept me very much awake. Thanks for the tips Tom now I’ve stopped falling asleep in class my grades have improved.

These are really good tips. Most of the time I only get 6 to 7 hours of sleep on school nights because I’m on the computer until 11pm or so. By the time I have to get up at 6am for school in the morning, I’m really tired. Now every once in awhile I fall asleep at 9PM when I’m really tired and I feel refreshed in the morning. I wish that happened more often. But none the less I do use those tips and always have to fall asleep.

These tips are really good. I would also add to sleep in a very comfortable place and if you have trouble sleeping, a good tips is to clear your mind to only think of things that are soothing and easy. Do NOT think of stresses or problems in your life or things that put your brain into overdrive. Thats not what you went when trying to sleep!

I have so much trouble sleeping, but it’s my own fault. I think the most important tip is watching what you eat in the late hours of the day. I tend to stay up late because I have a habit of eating dessert an hour or so after I’ve eaten my supper meal. So, what I did was just made a decision: Dessert at the end of the meal, or no dessert. Period. That has helped some. I get to bed about an hour and a half earlier because of that.
Thanks for the tips Chris!
