How to Beat Video Game Addiction

Video games are great fun, and sometimes it’s ok to go on a “gaming binge.” At some point, though, you need to stop yourself. When that time has come, admit that you’ve got a problem and cut it out completely.

  • Admit you have a problem- As cliche or cheesy as it may sound, the first step to recovery is to admit to yourself and others that you have a problem. Use the beginning sentence of this article as a starter.
  • Identify the problem Is it a particular game that you’re addicted to? Is it a genre of games? Be sure to find out exactly what it is that you’re addicted to.
  • Identify the triggers Triggers are mental and physical cues that cause you to want to indulge in your addiction, namely play games. Try and figure out what kind of things makes you want to play video games. Maybe its a particular website that you go to online that starts your video gaming frenzy. Maybe it’s being around certain people that make you crave a game or two. Do your best to figure out what kind of triggers make you want to play games.
  • Plan out your recovery Quitting video games cold turkey might seem like the best way to stop your addiction, but in reality, most people fail trying to quit completely. Your best plan would be to gradually wean yourself away from video games. Make yourself an ending date of when you want to be completely free from video games. Then, create steps to that ending date, with mini-goals that you want to achieve. For example, instead of playing for 20+ hours a week, try cutting it down to 18+ hours a week, and so on. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t reach your goals! Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your addiction won’t go away overnight.
  • Carry out your plan Start working on executing your plan. If you find out that your plan is too hard, then ease it up a bit. If you discover that your ending date happens to be the release date of Starcraft 2, postpone your ending date so you can indulge instead of potentially becoming an addict again. Whatever you do, be flexible with your options, but stick to your plan at all costs.

There is a video game addiction clinic in the Netherlands.

i am 16 years old still in school and dont have a jobs as of yet because i am still looking for a job but i must say i do play on my xbox 360 a bit much well ever since i got it back i have been on it every day for about 6 to 8 hrs a day even on my school days. I mostly play games when i am bord now i am not saying i dont go ou with friends because i do. then main games that i play a lot are 1.cod4 2. burnout 3. halo3 and a few others as well.

anyways this was a good video i will be trying to cut down on the gameing hrs i do because it must be about 30 or 40 hrs a week which is about 8 grs a day.

heres another tip., just stop playing its as simple as that. if you like playing games all day then play all day, you make of life as you want it to be. if you want to move on then do so. if you enjoy playing games 40+hours a week then do that as well, people have there own hobbys and if you want to play games as a hobby then do it. your not looseing money like gambeling. I myself dont consider games an addiction btw

I believe video game addiction should be considered the same as compulsive gambling and other impulse control disorders. In fact, the American Psychiatric Association considered adding it to the DSM (basically the bible of mental disorders) last year. Although they couldn’t due to lack of scientific research, i think this topic will continue to receive more attention in the future.

I just found out that my brother has been added to this book for his high scores in California Games. (remember that?) Congrats bro! Update - It’s a good thing he doesn’t have avideo game addiction.

Easiest way I think is just find something else to do that requires you not being in close proximity of video games or a pc.

I had problem like this. i was playing alot=t of video games. I realized it was not good for me, and I just stopped, found other things to do. good list btw.

I have found that quiting games is really hard and you need to really convince yourself to do this.

When i “quit” playing games I just tried going outside, go play with my friends and most of all not be in with nothing to do. Another way is to limit the hours you play your games. This is what help me escape the addiction though I still play a lot I can still say that if I don’t need to play i can stop easily.

The biggest problems with games are the achievements. Like Ace Combat series, the more you play the better fighter jet’s you unlock/buy. BF2, the more you play you unlock new weapons, you advance in ranks etc… .

This is mine opinion, but if games were more simple when it comes to story line or replaying the game over again we would not have a problem.

when I was little I met a lot of friends talking about videogames…
its part of my life

I go on video game binges.

Be careful kiddies… In 1987 I started experimenting with Nintendo on weekends. Flash forward 20 years and now I can’t even get off on anything less than 64bit at 12 hour doses.

I am 17, I go to college and play about 30 hours of video games a week.

What kind of pussyass bullshit is that…noob

lol i was playing my psp and listing to this in the background.

You all have AIDS, especially the guy that penned this article. Just because somebody lacks time management skills doesn’t qualify whatever activity they’re engaging in as an addiction. I’m also surprised to see only one person’s post was in opposition to the article; it just goes to show you that people are unable to think for themselves anymore. You guys read one condescending and flaky article and everybody here is complete concurrence.

Video games are merely just a newer form of media, for which people can engage in. I’m almost unable to comprehend the author’s understanding that people who play video games for prolonged periods of time have a “problem”. Video games are an entirely harmless hobby/past-time. I strongly recommend that the author reexamine his article, because it fails on so many levels. However, I don’t know even know why I’m bothering with all of this since anybody with a mind to think for themselves will see through this guy’s shenanigans.

Maybe I should show my friend this article, he has a little addiction to World of Warcraft. I think if he has 3 lvl 70 characters, and about 15 cans of soda on his computer then I guess you can say he has a problem. If games limited the amount of hours you can play every day then there would be less of an addiction. Anyone agree with me on this one?

lol, i was mining on eve ;p

hehe i do like 20 hours a day, i’m not addicted i can quite when ever i want, but the thing is. i make money i sold my WoW account and made 250 pounds

I was trying to install gears of war. Got it working!

“i can quite when ever i want” is the #1 excuse used by people with addictions…lol

i confess i’m addicted with hack’n slash games (ninja gaiden , god of war, devil may cry…)
but it’s not a big problem ….i have many friends! I just spend my free time playing only video games.
