Wubi or Live CD for Linux

When I opened the 888-PIRILLO phone line the other night, I had an interesting call with a Linux problem. Let’s take a listen and see how it worked out.

The caller had tried downloading Linux to the computer using Wubi. Once he did that on his Vista machine and loaded it, the screen went blue and red and said the graphics card was incompatible. He wondered what ideas I may have. The first question I had is whether Wubi itself is Vista compatible.

For those who may not know, here is an explanation about Wubi:

Wubi is an unofficial Ubuntu installer for Windows users that will bring you into the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other application. If you heard about Linux and Ubuntu, if you wanted to try them but you were afraid, this is for you.

My suggestion is to forget Wubi altogether, and just use a Live CD. All you have to do is download the .ISO and burn it to a CD using a burning program. Then simply put the CD in the drive and reboot your machine. If the machine isn’t set to read from the CD, you can just toggle to that. The great thing about live CDs is that you can reboot and be in Linux, then reboot again with the CD out… and you’re back in Windows. You don’t actually “install” Linux on your hard drive this way, and you can still try it out without making any changes to your system.

  1. NEVER use wubi omfg i hated linux at first because that crappy beta sutff,If you dont have a blank cd order one dont use wubi,if you dont know how to boot from cd then you should not be using linux,or “google it”

  2. on a vurtual pc or what? omg never install ubuntu or wubi or something linix related!!! WARNING!!!!!! !!! !!!! !!!! ESPECIALLY NOT VISTA EVEN THOW IT SUCKS!!!

  3. Wubi seems like an interesting idea. Sounds a lot like CoLinux, though, so I wonder where they’re trying to set up a market.

I agree, though. The best way to experience Linux is to run it native (either installed or via a LiveCD). You’ll never really appreciate a Linux distribution when it’s hindered by a bunch of other crap running on the system.

  4. There is no problem using vista and linux, my computer is running vista and it has ran wubi fine, its ran live cds fine, and it is now running a fully installed version of ubuntu on it. I would say use a Live CD over wubi to start, but i’d say use wubi before total install, live cd has that dis advantage of being able to install and keep them installed for next time you want to use live cd again. Ive been using wubi for like a week now without going on vista for all my basic needs 🙂

  5. Just installed Ubuntu myself and would definitely use the Live CD. It also gives you something to boot from if everything on the system goes haywire.

  6. Wubi works fine with Vista, I installed Kubuntu with no problem. In most cases, I prefer it to a live CD, as it boots and runs a lot faster and does nothing irreversible to the disk. it creates a virtual partition which can be reversed by merely running Wubi a second time.

  7. Yeah i also agree that using a Live CD is probobly a better idea.I tried installing Linux using Wubi and one more software that i cant remember, but the installation was never completed and i kept running into errors. But with the Live CD,everything went well, and I;m really happy that i got to experience Linux.

  8. Dude, Ik, he’s like an eight year old. He’s trying to sound really cool, but in reality he’s really not that smart at all. “Duz it work on a 32 bit?” It’s like wtf? What DOESN’T run on an Intel x86? That’s the first thing most OS’s are targeted for. The kid has a big lisp too. Woobi? “I downloaded it to my computer”. What is that? “The graphics card was like incompatible or something like that.” “What I could like do to make it work”? Seriously, this kid needs help. But he trys hard

  9. i personally dont see any problems with wubi and apparently nor does Canonical which is the company branch behind Ubuntu. As they are looking to incorporate it in the up coming 8.04 release

  10. not necessarily, i’ve had them come in less than a week, it depends how many orders they have queued up at the time, and you can’t really complain about the timing when you get the disks for free! (or at least used to be able to…) ^_^

  11. shut the fuck up, if i see you id knock you into next week. He phoned up for some advice because he wants to enter the world of linux, BIG WOW. hes not trying to sound cool, because it does actualy say [i think on wubi website] that its for 64bit but you can *force* it to go on32bit. so he was right to ask their.
    thanks, all i gotta say

  12. thinking of installing ubuntu, i just got in the mail today a copy of ubunutu 8.04LTS 64bit. i have vista ultimate 64 bit. if you go to the wubi page, it does says under requirements “vista”. i was thinking of using wubi just because i dont want ubuntu to load first after i install with dual boot. last time i did that and tried to reconfig the boot loader to load windows first it didnt work. hopefully with wubi i can install ubuntu and not change the boot sequence. anyone know if wubi needs CD

  13. I was curious about Linux and Ubuntu. Read the heading ‘Wubi is Simple’ ‘Never been Easier’ so thought I would give Wubi a try before progressing to Ubuntu.

Not easy for me I’m afraid, can’t get the ‘Never been Easier’ Wabi to install, ZoneAlarm pops up and interrupts the process and refuses to continue, dare say if I shut down ZoneAlarm or messed about with its settings I would be able to continue – but I can’t be bothered ! ! !

  14. Wubi does __ALWAYS__ work fine.
    As stated above the right path to follow would be;
LiveCD – just to get a hang of the new linux os
Wubi – Install and start working (though on the crippled file-system of Win)
Install Ubuntu on a partition and allow dual-boot. This way Ubuntu is no on Win file-system.
