Chris just wondering what are your thoughts on the Penryn Mac Pro, and why hasn’t Apple jump on the Blu-ray band wagon yet? I’m planning on getting the new MacPro 8 Core 3.2ghz 45nm processors, 2 300gb 15,000rpm SAS, 512MBGeforce 8800 GT, 2 SuperDrives, Airport Extreme, i’ve saving up for this computer over a year, sold my PC/ MAC computer equipment, sold my 23inch to get a 30inch cinema display but waiting for the new ones to come out, heard that Dell has a new 30inch out. so can you do a video on the new Mac Pro and what your opinion on it, and are you still planning on getting a Mac Pro for yourself?
First, I think the new Mac Pro looks awesome - and I’ll be ordering mine after we get back from Hawaii. Second, if you really want Blu-ray, just buy an external drive for any computer you own. Third, I’m not sure I want to go SAS or SATA, since you can only do one or the other with this machine (and SAS must be configured with the RAID card). Not sure why you’d go with NVIDIA when a single (default) ATI should suffice on OS X. I’d buy whichever 30″ is most affordable, since most of ‘em are just about the same…

There is one reason for the high end video cards… people such as GranitW (a community member) and other people that do work with high end rendering software will benefit from them due to Final Cut Pro/Final Cut Express, and some other mac software that does rendering uses the video card to do alot of the work and say the geforce 8800 card would save lots of time with a serious render.

Wait a week. Apple will almost certainly announce a bunch of HD-related stuff next week, so blu-ray support will be a lot clearer then.
Personally, I’d ditch the SAS drives; for $2150 you could buy 4x 10k RPM SATA Raptors ($700 total) and RAID 1+0 them, and then buy an extra 16 GB from OWC for $800-$1550, depending on which of their choices you go with. That’ll almost certainly give you a faster system for less money. If you decide that you really, really want to do SAS, consider buying one of Areca’s cards (bootable on Mac Pros) and using a cheap external enclosure. I’ve seen 4-drive SATA/SAS enclosures that aren’t particularly pricy. That’ll probably end up saving you money, and you can do it at any time, so you don’t have to decide up front. Plus, that’ll let you mix SATA and SAS, so you can throw a big drive or two into the system for Time Machine.
Personally, I don’t know what you’d do with 2×30″ screens, but whatever. Al Gore seems to use 3 of them, so I guess it’s possible. I swapped 2×24″ Dells for 1×30″ HP and I’m pretty happy, although I’d swap for 1×36-40″ if they were available on the market at a high enough resolution.

Kingston RAM prices have dropped tremendously for the Mac Pro, still expensive by comparison to other pc system RAM, but far shy of Apple pricing. Enjoy your Mac Pro. Yeah, I’m still tossed up on the memory… gotta order that soon. Chris, yesterday finallyswitch to the Macas his main machine. He’s got a beast of a machine as well. Two 3.2GHz Quad Processors. 16GB of RAM and (though he already had them), two Dell 30″ Displays. You can check out his Mac experiences and watch his 24 hour live stream, every day at
