Open Source Questions and Answers

John Perez is a college Freshman who is doing an argumentative paper on Open-Source applications. He sent me a list of questions that I am going to answer in simple terms. Also, we’re using our GoToMeeting to allow you to follow along with everyone as they use Open-Source applications.
What do you think Open-Source stands for and signifies? It’s a fundamental shift in how we think about software, its use and development. Unfortunately, I’m not a Developer. The mainstream still believes that you must walk into a store to buy software. That simply isn’t the case. There are tremendous alternatives to major applications that are available legally for free, via Open-Source.
What would be the advantages or disadvantages of adopting standards? Imagine you had 1000 people in the same room, all with different great ideas. How impossible would it be to get them all to agree on ONE idea? I look at things differently than most standards committees. There are politics inside the Open-Source community. But, for the common good, coming together to agree on a set of standards would be amazing, and make the community stronger.
For businesses, what do you think would be the effects of adopting standards? It depends on the business model. I am able to exist as a business online largely due to Open-Source programs and applications. Much of this is accomplished using Apache.
In the US, many Universities have made a switch to Open-Source. What do you think caused them to make the switch, and what will it take to get others to follow? I think it boils down to cost. Universities have lost large amounts of money from the government. One way to help keep tuition costs down, is to obtain good software alternatives for free. You also have to look at the education factor, by being able to turn the Open-Source applications into learning tools.
What would be the effects of using Open-Source in homes? We’re seeing a lot of lower-cost computers. Instead of having to pay a licensing fee, you can get an Open-Source Linux Distro. You can also obtain software for almost any type of program you need, from image editing to web browsing and email applications. This will save household consumers quite a lot of money.
Are there there sufficient Open-Source alternatives to proprietary software suites? Absolutely!! Open Office can replace your existing office suite for free. The Gimp can replace your image editing software. FireFox can replace your web browser. For 99% of the population, Open-Source is a GREAT alternative.

I love to play with my new TENORI-ON. However, I’ve been having trouble finding a way to sync the music from the TENORI-ON to my computer, so I can save it out as a Midi file. The TENORI-ON comes with Midi cables, so all I needed was the software to make it happen.
Finally I find it! With the free SimpleSynth, I can now easily sync the channels from the TENORI-ON perfectly to the channels on my Mac. SimpleSynth is a simple soft synth for Mac OS X that takes input from a connected MIDI device, and can play instruments from Soundfonts and DLS files including Apple’s default General MIDI sound set. It’s small but powerful!
In order to accomplish this, I connected the TENORI-ON to my Mac, using the provided MIDI cables. I then poured the music I had made into the Mac, and used SimpleSynth to synchronize the music from the TENORI-ON onto the Mac itself. If you listen, you can hear that they now play in perfect harmony, and with perfect precision. I can save this as a MIDI file on my Mac now, to open and play at a later time! How cool is that?
If you’re like me and love MIDI files, this free software is definitely for you!

Notebooks come with many accessories. Something important that you really need is something to keep it cool. You can find many different options online. Let’s take a look at this Targus Notebook cooler.
The Targus Notebook Cooling Chill Mat really works! My Mac is running about ten degrees cooler on average. It’s definitely cooler to the touch, where it used to run a bit warm. The best thing about it, is the fact that there’s no need for a power cord. It runs off of a mini-USB port, and includes four additional USB ports! I don’t really like the long USB cable that comes with it, but we all know how much I hate ALL cords. I’m going to try and find a retractable cord to use.
Maximize notebook performance by keeping the notebook cool during use. Two fans generate cool air to help prevent the notebook from overheating. The Chill Mat can be used in the office to protect furniture from heat damage, or on the go to protect your lap from notebook heat. Four rubber feet keep your notebook in place on the Chill Mat to avoid slipping and provide a sturdy workspace. The Chill Mat is highly portable for travel and plugs directly into your notebooks’ USB port so no AC adapter is required.
At only about $30.00, this truly is an excellent buy. One tip to keep in mind, is to turn the cooling on prior to booting up the notebook, for maximum cooling performance.

chill, cool, laptop, notebookBuying a Desk
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
I am looking into possibly buying myself a new desk soon. These tips sent in by community member Serores will definitely come in handy for me. I hope they will for you, as well.
- Size: If you’re only going to be using a laptop and maybe some books and papers, you dont have to waste your money on a huge desk. This way, you can save a lot of money and buy other things to enjoy in your home office. On the other hand, if you have a huge monster computer like the one Chris gave to Kat, you may want a bigger desk. This also depends on the kind of monitor you’re using, and if you want your computer tower on or under your desk.
- Shape: Chances are, if you’ve had your house for awhile you already have a pretty cluttered office. So, here comes the question of where will you put your desk? If you want it in the corner, get a triangular one. If you want it just on the flat wall get a square one. If you want it on the ceiling, you’re looking at spending a lot of money on duct-tape… so I dont recommend that.
- Compartments: If you’re the kind of person with a lot of knicknacks, papers, books, and other miscellaneous items, you may want to look into a desk with a lot of compartments. The compartments should be various sizes to fit everything you need. This is where, if you want to get fancy, you can bring a list of things you’ll have on your desk shopping with you, to remind you of what you have. This way, you can look at a desk and picture how everything would go on it.
- Quality: Simple, if you have a lot of heavy stuff… you dont want your desk to fall over. Also, a good sturdy desk is best when you have kids or pets that are always jumping off the walls. Another exaple of quality is wood smoothness. If you’re an artist like me, you know what it’s like to draw on a table with gaps between the boards when you have no tablet.
- Look: I know for me this would be the last thing I look at. However, for some this may be of high importantance. Pick something that matches your style and color scheme (if you have one). Also, stay away from annoying bright crazy colors that won’t let you focus on a book or the screen, because you are distracted by your desk.

computer, desk, officeCanon Digital Camera (SLR): Rebel XTi
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
Back in the seventh grade, I won a prize of being able to take a few classes at the local Arts center. Back then, we didn’t have Digital Cameras. We learned with an actual film (SLR) camera. I fell in love with taking pictures that day, and that is one love that has never waned.
I upgraded our family to the new Canon Rebel XTi. The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi offers an unbeatable combination of performance, ease-of-use and value. It has a newly designed 10.1 MP Canon CMOS sensor plus a host of new features including a 2.5-inch LCD monitor, the exclusive EOS Integrated Cleaning System featuring a Self Cleaning Sensor and Canon’s Picture Style technology, all in a lightweight, ergonomic body. The Digital Rebel XTi is proof positive that Canon continues to lead the way with their phenomenal digital SLRs.
Canon’s large-area CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) sensor captures images with exceptional clarity and tonal range, and offers the most pixels in its class. This APS-C size sensor (22.2 x 14.8mm) has the same 3:2 ratio as film cameras, enabling an effective angle of view that is 1.6x the normal EF Lens focal length. With an effective pixel resolution of 3,904 x 2,598, the EOS Digital Rebel XTi offers superb detail and clarity, even in large prints, and generates finished files that open at approximately 30MB in your image-editing software. On Canon’s CMOS sensor, each pixel is captured with fine detail to create images of tremendous depth and resolution, ensuring enough information for even poster-sized prints.
The EOS Digital Rebel XTi is the product of Canon’s extensive in-house development: The DIGIC II Image Processor was designed specifically for Canon digital SLR cameras and enhances every aspect of image capture. Information captured by the CMOS sensor is processed and assembled into images of exceptional quality. With the DIGIC II Image Processor on board, photographers can expect natural color reproduction, precise white balance in any number of lighting situations and unparalleled clarity. The DIGIC II Image Processor employs sophisticated signal processing algorithms and works at greater speeds, all while consuming less energy.
Color or black and white… it doesn’t matter. I just love photography. This thing takes amazing photos with unqualified outcome. Ponzi and I are going to take some photography classes together. However, I’ve learned a lot over the years. If you’re taking pictures of people, keep in mind the “rule of thirds”. People tend to take pictures of people and things from a “centered” position. However, you can set better harmony in the picture by having your subject just a tiny bit off-center. It is just a dramatic change. It’s not “palpable”, it’s just there and very noticeable.
All in all, I’m ridiculously happy with this camera. Once again… Canon FTW.

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
Awhile back, I recorded a video about the “One Laptop Per Child” program. I purchased one myself. I did it to help another child, and to have a laptop around my house for when kids come over. When you donate the $400.00, you receive the laptop for yourself, one is sent to a child in an underprivelidge country, and you also get 1 year of T-Mobile HotSpot for free! I received the laptop, so let’s check it out!
On first look, it has a lot of apps a kid would use. There is a chat module, Web browser, an RSS aggregator, calculator, and so much more. It’s slim and lightweight, which is great for a kid. It has USB connections, as well as audio in and out. It’s quite durable, and you can carry the screen around. The quality of the screen is excellent.
However, I don’t really like the user interface. I know my way around a computer, and I actually found it confusing to navigate around this laptop. I also couldn’t connect it to my home network because it’s not supported. But again, for a child doing the things they’d need to do, it works perfectly. The keys are small and designed for a child’s fingers. This laptop was designed for portability and education, not high power and workload.
Ponzi wanted to try it, so I had to hand it over to her. She waited really patiently! She wanted one of the Asus EEE laptops for Christmas, until she found out it comes installed with Linux. However, we have found out recently that Asus is looking into making their laptops come with Windows on them. We’re holding off for now.
If you’ve received one of these laptops and have had a child use them, I’d love to hear about your experience. Please leave me a comment or shoot me an email to chris@pirillo.com.

Asus, laptop, olpcThe Best Hard Drive Enclosure
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
I have a large collection of hard drives lying around. I’ve been looking for a great enclosure for at least one of these, to use as an external drive. I’d rather it be a FireWire 800, as the transfer rates are just outstanding. However, those are hard to come by. Finally… I found exactly what I need.
the Mini Stack version 3 from Newertech.com is just amazing. You can order just the shell to put your own hard drive in. Or, you can order it with a hard drive installed up to 1 Terrabyte. With its eSATA, two FireWire 800, one FireWire 400, and three USB 2.0 ports PLUS FW800/FW400/USB2.0 connection cables included, miniStack v3 connects to Mac and PC systems with Plug-n-Play simplicity.
There are so many high performance speed components in miniStack v3 that you’d be tempted to drag race it. The latest generation Oxford 924 chipset, the fastest drive mechanisms on the market, and an eSATA port all combine to deliver the fastest single drive data transfer rates possible…up to 150 Megabytes per second! Having a “quad interface” in one portable housing makes miniStack v3 ideal for data intensive uses like audio/video editing, digital photography, MP3 libraries and high-speed back up. Plus, now you can connect multiple desktop digital accessories like scanners, printers, memory card readers, digital cameras, and iPods – all at once – with miniStack v3’s unique, ergonomically enhanced rear and side port configuration.
The price is just right for one of these. It’s an absolutely amazing device!

firewire, hard drive, usb13 Port USB Hub!
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
I absolutely love USB. I’ve made no secret of that fact in the past. I run out of USB ports all the time. I have 8 ports on my computer itself, and an additional 7 off the pc. I still don’t have enough! So, receiving this for Christmas was great!
Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a serial bus standard to interface devices. USB was designed to allow peripherals to be connected using a single standardized interface socket and to improve plug-and-play capabilities by allowing devices to be connected and disconnected without rebooting the computer (hot swapping). Other convenient features include providing power to low-consumption devices without the need for an external power supply and allowing many devices to be used without requiring manufacturer specific, individual device drivers to be installed.
I have tons of thumb drives, have used the USB Snowman, and even the doggie that plugs into a USB port and does “doggie things”. I’m looking for more cool USB devices. What ideas of things I can get do you have? Leave me a follow-up comment, or send an email to me at chris@pirillo.com.

gadgets, port, usbWhere did you holiday shop?
Finally, the holiday season is coming to a close and I can give my wallet a well deserved rest. The holiday season is hectic, it’s filled with about a month of spending more money than you actually want, and receiving tons of stuff you may not actually want. But since it’s all over now, and the panic attacks have subsided, I want to know, where did you do your shopping?
In the digital age we live in, you can complete your shopping within a couple hours just by visiting amazon and a handful of other sites (not to mention you can do this from work when your boss isn’t looking). There are also the more traditional folk who prefer to duke it out with everyone else at the brick and mortar stores. So which one are you?
A lot of people finished all their holiday shopping before hand (we call these people ‘the smart ones’), be it on black friday or some other time before the holidays, but most likely you spent the last couple weeks or days scrambling to pickup presents.
Drop a comment below and let me know. Did you finish your shopping from home in the comfort of your footy pajamas, or did you spend 2 hours in line at Best Buy just hoping the guy in front of you didn’t get the very last Wii?
Holidays, shoppingeBay and PayPal Security
Gary may just save your skin with this security tip…
Good morning, afternoon, or evening whatever it happens to be in your area. I don’t know if you’ve heard of these 2 accessories that Paypal uses but I know from your eBay videos that you and your family have both eBay and Paypal accounts. Paypal has 2 new items the first Item I’d like to mention is the Paypal Security Key. This item adds an extra level of security to both your Ebay and Paypal account. You must purchase it through one of the sites however it can be activated on both services.
To get it go to www.paypal.com/securitykey or www.ebay.com/securitykey. The device costs you $5 - this includes shipping. What you get is a small little device with a keychain attachment at the end of it. How it works is simple each time the button is pressed the small LCD on the device will generate a random 6-digit #. You first activate it by going to the sites I mentioned above and following the instructions under activating it. Once you do this after entering your Ebay or Paypal user ID and password you get presented with a 3rd screen which tells you to enter the 6-digit code from the security key and click the button. Then you are logged into the respective account.
This helps protect you if you gave your information to a fraud email or a virus or Trojan happens to get your information They may have your ID and Password but they can’t use the same 6-digit code the key generated the last time you logged in. The 2nd thing I’m mentioning is the Paypal toolbar. This Feature helps you when you are buying stuff online it allows you to use your PayPal address and contact information to fill in order forms when on a shopping website. The toolbar also allows to generate Single or mult-use MasterCard #’s which are tied to your Paypal account thus allowing you to use your Paypal funds on a site where paying with Paypal isn’t an option. Anyone wanting the Paypal toolbar can just go into their Paypal accounts and under enhance account click Paypal toolbar. Hope these items help you or follow lockergnome subscribers or YouTube subscribers alike.
Dude, that’s an amazing tip! Thanks!
ebay, paypal, securityDigital Picture Frame Questions
Who doesn’t have a digital picture frame these days? Steve in Waterford, MI is a new initiate…
I was introduced to Digital Picture Frames this Christmas when my daughter and her husband gave my wife and I a small Digital Picture Frame. Having said that, I have purchased a 4 gig card and will start to fill that up for my wife to display in our living room.
My hobby is photography and I have a have a Nikon D200 and a load of lenses. The D200 is a 10.2 megapixel camera. I generally shoot both RAW and JPG fine images and that way I don’t have to run a time consuming conversion program later when I distribute the pictures to friends and relatives. My JPG fine files are roughly 6mb.
Have said this, I am now trying to do some research on larger screen size and higher resolution Picture Frames. I like the fact that many of these frames take memory cards, but I am wondering if someone makes a frame that would accept an external USB HD like the Western Digital Passport. I am thinking I might like a frame in the 15″-19″ size that will display high resolution and I see there are some out there. I have not found many reviews on these units to date and being new to this, I am a bit confused. I am told LCD is the way to go.
There are many times when friends visit us, and we want to show them our pictures. I would really like to show them on the TV in the living room. I have done this before but the clarity is not good. We generally drag out our laptop and external hard drives. The screen on our laptop is only 14″, but is has a fairly sharp LCD screen.
Sometime in the near future we will no doubt upgrade our living room TV to a flat screen. We can probably handle about 32″ in the cabinet we have. We have a Plazma flat screen in the bedroom running HD and also a dish running HD in the rec. room. Are we better off focusing our attention on a new TV that will display high resolution images than to look at a high resolution digital picture frame for this application?
With that said, I am still interested in a larger digital photo album (8×10 to 15″ possibly) we can leave in the living room to display our Nikon high-res photos…………family, friends, hobbies, etc. What do you recommend in a high picture quality digital photo album?
Not sure about making any specific recommendations. You’re likely best off running a computer through one of your TV’s inputs, and then using some photo / Flickr screen saver to stream in photos that way…?

Tips for a New Mac User
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
Daniel is the producer of the Apple Universe podcast. He made this video for us, with his top five tips for beginning Mac Users.
- There is no “menu bar” on a Mac, like there is for Windows. On the left hand side of the Mac screen, you will see the Dock with your applications on it. At the top of the screen, you’ll see a thin white bar. This is Mac’s version of the “menu bar”. This includes things like the clock, view, edit, go, help, and the Apple icon.
- Get to know your applications. Both a Mac and a PC come with applications native to their Operating System. Many of them do inherantly the same things, but they work very differently. Take the time to get to know the programs, and how they run, before deciding which you like better.
- The User Interface on the Mac is much different than on a PC. In my opinion, the Mac UI is just sleek and gorgeous. An example of the differences though, is with the “close”, “maximize”, and “minimize” buttons in each. In Windows, you have the little cirlce with the red X at the top right corner to close a program, the square with the two smaller squares for maximizing, and the square with one line in it to minimize. In a Mac, “close” is a red light/circle at the top left, “minimize” is a yellow circle/light, and “maxmize” is a green circle/light. That’s just one of many small differences that take getting used to.
- There is a big difference in the way software updates work on each of the Operating Systems. Make sure you get to understand how this works on a Mac right away, so you can make sure everything stays up-to-date.
- A Mac is simply more stable, and virus-free. I have too many anti-malware programs on my Windows computer, which bogs it down. With a Mac… I simply don’t need them.
I’m glad Chris asked me to do this video for him. I wanted to share my tips with you all, and also promote a big event I will soon be at. From January 14th - 18th is the 2008 MacWorld Expo. On the 15th at around 5pm, I will be joining people like Robert Scoble, Cali Lewis, iJustine, and Jason Snell for a panel discussion all about Mac! I will be recording this discussion as my 100th episode of Apple Universe. I am very excited about this, and hope you’ll join the audience if you attend MacWorld 2008.

Ponzi got me the coolest thing for Christmas! They’re the perfect compliment for my Tix Clocks, and really make my office fun to be in… and hopefully fun for you all to look at, as well.
The Cyron HT 1502 Media Highlighter System is a full color spectrum solid-state lighting system. Ideal for accent lighting and ambient lighting for confined areas. Produce any color of light at a push of a button. Six pre-programmed patterns and a music mode. Safe low-voltage, no heat, enery efficient and 50,000-hour life.
I decided to put these on the top of my desk hutch. They use hardly any energy, and don’t put off much heat. They change colors, and put out a heck of a lot of light. These things are way cool looking, aren’t they? If you come by the chat room and type in what is glow, you’ll get the link to this product.
Thanks so much to Ponzi, for always knowing exactly what I want… even if I don’t know it myself.
