eBay Problems

I’ve been eBaying a few odd items lately, and last night some moron kid from Florida ruined half of the last minute auctions by jumping in and placing bunk bids. It was too late to block him or remove him from the bid list. As you can imagine, I was quite irate. I fired off an email to my personal eBay expert, Chuck. He responded:

Safe Toys for Kids

Via Andrea Martini of Alex’s Coupons

What a challenge this holiday season is shaping up to be! With toy shopping taking on more of a Russian Roulette feel every day, how are we supposed to feel good about the toys we are getting for our kids? It seems every time I turn on the TV or open up the newspaper I’m hit with yet another toy recall leaving me feeling like teaching my five year old to juggle knives would be safer than purchasing the latest “must have” toy!

YouTube is Television

I already mentioned that when I picked up my copy of Leopard at Best Buy the other week, the checkout clerk clearly recognized me for my videos on YouTube. That was the first time I’d ever been “seen” as a YouTube publisher in public. Pretty nifty.

Internet Magic Tricks

Jonathan (aka FearedBliss from the chat room) submits:

I came across to great pranks that you can play on friends and colleagues. The first one is PeterAnswers.com, If you have good knowledge on a person you can actually trick them into thinking that the website knows the answer to what they’re asking. It’s pretty simple all you have to do is in the petition area you just press . then type in the answer then press . again, while your typing this , the field will be typing in something else, it’s pretty much masking your answer. Then in the question box you enter the question.

Digitizing Old VHS Tapes to DVD

YouTube subscriber Jonathan B. asks:

Good evening, I hope you and Ponzi are doing well. My question is twofold. First my father is an ordained minister and is currently teaching theology and all related subjects to students in the Philippines. His mentor who he studied under allowed him and others to tape his classes those tapes are in some 14 to 15 years old and if something happens to them since my fathers Bible teacher passed away a few years ago, they cannot be replaced. My fathers other interest is in audio equipment and he knows how to set-up a computer to record audio from these aforementioned tapes. The problem is that we have gone as far as recording them with the “Narrate Timeline” feature in Windows Moviemaker, but such a redneck method means that if we mess up on the audio settings we generally have to start all over recording. My question is this, is there a free program out or one that is moderately priced, that would allow us to record these tapes through a laptop into any format so that we can burn them to c.d.’s or put them on portable players such as ipod’s or anyother brand name mp3 players, plus eventually put them on a website, to include the obvious feature of being able to control all aspects of the audio.

Windows Vista Network Tip

The user known as “alpha” emailed me the following excerpt from Tim Anderson’s ITWriting:

The Microsoft Windows Vista OS enables the TCP Window Scaling option by default (previous Windows OSes had this option disabled). The TCP Window Scaling option is described in RFC 1323 (TCP Extensions for High Performance), and allows for the device to advertise a receive window larger than 65 K than TCP originally specified. This is useful in the higher speed networks of today, where more data can be outstanding on the wire before it is acknowledged. This slow performance, or dropped TCP connections is caused by some versions of Cisco IOS® Firewall software not supporting the TCP Window Scaling option. This causes it to have a much smaller TCP window than the endpoints actually have. This causes the Cisco IOS router that runs the IOS Firewall feature set to drop packets that it believes are outside the TCP window, but which really are not.
