How to Say “OS X”

How do you pronounce “OS X”? Are you absolutely sure you’re saying it correctly? My friend Daniel made an excellent blog post putting this to rest once and for all.
There seems to be some confusion, with most people either saying “Oh Es Ex” or “Oh Es Ten“. OS X comes with a built-in program called say which literally “says” anything you tell it to. Simply open a terminal window and type in say “X”. The computer will respond X (as in “ex”). Now, type in say “OS X”, and it responds OS TEN.
There you have it… straight from the manufacturer themselves.

I used to say “OS ex” until I heard Steve Jobs say “OS ten”. I think he knows a little about it…

The irony of course is as you were being a stickler about how to say “OS X” you end with the use of a word that doesn’t exist in the English language. What exactly is “pronunciate”?

I call it Os “X” sometimes, but not because I don’t know better. It just…happens sometimes.

Chris Pirillo just put uphis own blog post and videoof Apple’s say command pronouncing “OS X”. He’s all into the video thing these days, so his has the whole voice over deal and larger fonts. If you can stomach another brief foray into pedantry do check it out.

This is how you can easily tell between a long-time Mac user and a newcomer.
Long-time Mac users would know it’s pronounced “OS TEN” because:
1.) That’s how Apple has always said it’s pronounced since its announcement 7 years ago.
2.) The version of Mac OS right before OS X is OS 9. What comes after 9?
3.) While the “X” gives it the edgy feeling when typed/written/displayed, by pronouncing it “TEN” avoids making it pretentious ;)

I think the software incompatibilities in Windows Vista should be releived by making future versions of Mac OS X have the Win32 API function with the operating system! reply with a * if agreed!

Actually, I was at WWDC when Apple announced Mac OS X and it had been explained by various Apple evangelists at the conference that it’s Mac OS “Ten”, not Mac OS “Ex.”
Next day, I go to a session on printing and print drivers. Sure enough, Apple has dragged in HP, Canon, etc. The Canon guy, I think it was, gets up on stage and talks about how excited they are to be working so closely with Apple and developing print drivers for Mac OS “Ex” and how great Mac OS “Ex” is going to be.
My first thought? “Yeah, if you’re going to be working so closely with Apple, make sure you pronounce the name of their operating system correctly.”
It’s sort of the aural equivalent of MAC versus Mac.

pronunciation all along, I will continue to use it, as personally, I think that it just sounds a lot cooler than the proper pronunciation. And thats my 2 cents 4 this day, Friday, October 26, on the proper pronunciation of OS X. Using Safari, select text from your web site, then go to Safari>Services>Speech>Start Speaking Text
As you note, the computer says, OH ES TEN.
If you’re using Leopard, be sure to choose the new Alex voice in the Speech preference panel.

Simply stated, Roman number 10 is X—-it’s that simple—Apple used X as an eyecatching gimmick and it worked—OS X is simply OS 10 and pronouncing it is straightforward–if you were never taught in grade school how to count using Roman numbers you would have no idea that X is 10

Of course ten because it follows on from OS 9… and Tiger was OS 10.4 and now Leopard OS 10.5.. so where does an X come from. Simple it is the Roman numeral for ten or 10 but 10 would be equal to two in binary…. or 16 in Hexadecimal. Language is fun…

ve realized that what used to be true no longer is — Apples don’t run on different hardware, they run on the same PC based hardware as the rest of the desktop world. The only thing keeping OS X (which I say ‘X’ no matter whatSteve Jobs says) from installing on a regular PC is a special chip that says “Yes I was made by Apple.” Well, that and the license agreements. That didn’t stop MacWorld’s editor for making a FrankenMac, though.
