Real Urge for Music

I’m an URGE subscriber, so I didn’t bother to activate a Zune music subscription when I first got the device. URGE is pulling out of the Windows Media Player, apparently - and we have to contend with RealPainfulExperienceNetworks again…

This is AdamR from the chat room. After watching your video about music subscription services, I was wondering what you thought of MTV bailing on URGE and Microsoft and switching to Rhapsody / RealNetworks. Also, how will this effect URGE inside of Windows Media Player 11 and how will it affect your subscription since you said you couldn’t live without music subscription, and weren’t really pleased or comfortable with Rhapsody or Real.

The reason I ask is because I live inside of Windows Media Player for my music and have been considering an URGE subscription. However, I don’t want to lock into something if I’m not going to be forced to use Rhapsody / Real (which I absolutely refuse to taint my computer with) sometime down the road.

I personally see this as a huge opportunity for Microsoft if they would just play their cards right. They need to ditch the Zune software, put PlayForSure support into the Zune, and integrate what used to be URGE into their collection of Live services and push that forward.

I don’t like the Real / Rhapsody Player on Windows - but I’m thrilled to report, however, that a Rhapsody / Real music subscription works just fine in Firefox on OS X (a few browser UI quirks, but the music is playing fine). To me, that’s all that matters - being able to pay a single fee every month to access all my favorite classic and new artists… screw this ala carte shit.

And DRM? Par for the course, unfortunately…

hey chris — i run PR for rhapsody, and am one of the original group of people who launched the service back in 2001. i just saw your post re: URGE and wanted to follow up.

the plan is to migrate URGE subscribers over to rhapsody over the coming months. for now, those subscribers can continue to use URGE via windows media player and can also use their same URGE login and password to try rhapsody. when the transition is complete, URGE will no longer be accessible via WMP.

the rhapsody and urge teams have merged and are now busily working away on plans for integrating urge’s coolest features into rhapsody. we will debut a fully-integrated version of the service next year.

anyway, just wanted to post a reply. feel free to email me at mgraves AT real DOT com if there’s anything else i can tell you.

p.s. — glad to hear you’re able to use the online version of the service via firefox; it also works on safari.

Hey Chris,

Thanks for answering my question. Though I’m not thrilled about listening to music inside of the browser. However, I guess I owe it to myself to try it out.

Again, Microsoft has a prime opportunity here if they take the bull by the horns, like I said on my blog.

Let’s hope they don’t screw it up. I hate being optimistic and doubtful at the same time…

“screw this ala carte ****.” 100% with u on that one mate!

Did I hear you say that you use an IPOD with the URGE subscription service? I thought they were incompatible.

I loved URGE/WMP combination. The interface was great. I did not like the Rhapsody service and have canceled. Is Microsoft going to issue an WMP upgrade to remove the Urge buttons?

Hello. I do a lot of my work from home. Listen to music all the time. I used URGE and loved it. It worked flawlessly with by Sansa MP3 Player and Windows Media Player 10 & 11 (including MS Vista.)

I am saddened by the choice (and a bad one mind you) of the executives to pull URGE. The service had the MOST songs and other enhancements for my money. I want my URGE back. Rhapsody is NOT fun nor does it work with my version of MS Vista (64bit.) What was so hard about having the hype of MS Media Player be the media manager? But isn’t that like corporate America? Find something that works, then pull it out from under your feet!

I am not going to add any more **** to my PC, that is RealPlayer, iTunes, Rhapsody and others.

Bring back URGE! I will pay! NOTHING ELSE COMPARES!

Yes Hello, I don’t know if any one will care or read this but I was an Urge All Acces To Go subscriber and ever since it was destroyed and mutated into a severely inadaquate and dummed down music player (Rhapsody) all of my songs, about 400, that I downloaded through them won’t refresth their dmr rights….so none of them work any more…. Is their any way to do this? Beacause all of these songs are my favorites and it would be REALLY expensive to actually BUY all of them…..And besides, Rhapsody won’t play any of Media Player’s music and vis versa….it’s so retarted…MTV or Microsoft really screwed us URGE subscribers over real bad…..THX - In Regards…

I used Urge for all my music, I paid monthly from a credit, when they changed over to Rhapsody (I hate), they automatically transferred my cc details without my knowledge. I cannot play any of the songs I purchased from Urge either on Windows Media Player or Rhapsody. Every time I try to contact Rhapsody I get transferred to India & they cannot advise me. Can someone please give me advice? Thanks

The persons responsible for the integration of the URGE customer base into Rhapsody should be tied to rocks and have their livers torn out by vultures on a daily basis. I would be willing to pay a monthly fee for this of oh, say, $14.95.
Not only can I no longer listen to the songs I painstakingly downloaded from URGE;
I CAN’T EVEN LISTEN TO THEM THROUGH RHAPSODY. INSTEAD OF MUSIC I GET ERROR MESSAGES. APPARENTLY THE SONGS ARE ON MY COMPUTER, AND RHAPSODY REFUSES TO PLAY THEM, OR AUTHORIZE THEM, EVEN THOUGH RHAPSODY SUPPOSEDLY OFFERS THAT MUSIC TO ITS OTHER SUBSCRIBERS. SO THE SPECIFIC MUSIC I WENT TO ALL THE TROUBLE OF ARRANGING FOR MY LISTENING PLEASURE IS EXACTLY THE MUSIC THAT RHAPSODY WILL NOT PLAY.
Death would be too good for them. Really.

Yah I know…., they (those in charge of ******** over thousands of URGE subscribers) deserve punishment at least as worse as was the one for Prometheous…. It just really isn’t fair, they could’ve AT LEAST PUT Rhapsody as an online music subscription service off of Media Player (Like Emusic and PureTracks and stuff like that) so that the two players could be integrated into each other because RHAPSODY SUCKS ***, AND IS BY FAR THE WORST MEDIA PLAYER I’VE EVER SEEN,…there’s so many problems with it…

What Do You Think?
