The Politics of Star Wars

In response to Jeff’s Advice for McCain (which, itself, was a response):

Maybe John McCain is going for the nerd vote with this commercial’s (as you put it) “Star Wars” production values? When you have Darth Vader in your video, it’s almost guaranteed to go viral. Upon watching this particular McCain political ad, I felt compelled to hop into my Landspeeder, float down to the local cantina, and down a few rounds of Jawa Juice with friends.

Help! (the Yellow Tint Video)

Oh man, the video quality totally sucks – but at least I did it. Since I’m a YouTube Director, I can upload more than ten minutes worth of video at a time. “It” doesn’t really have a name yet, “it” was recorded this morning at 3:30am live-to-tape, and “it” is just the beginning (as I hope to record in higher definition with better screen switching soon). For now, this certainly works. Three things to note: (1) Cat Schwartz should be joining me soon, virtually; (2) Darth Vader’s floating head will be a regular feature; and (3) While the workflow isn’t perfect yet, my EyeJot widget is the best way for you submit video.

FixDat Bluetooth Car Diagnostic Tool

When the check engine light comes on in the car, there’s always that slight panic wondering whether your car is about to bite it while you’re driving. DATZOO offers a solution that might give you some peace of mind while simultaneously allowing you to quickly adjust a bogus problem in your system. Their new FixDat diagnostics tool plugs into the On-Board Diagnostics II port on your car (the same port used for smog checks in places like California and Washington). If the car generates a check engine event, FixDat reads the code and makes it available to software installed on any Bluetooth connected cell phone or laptop. You can read the code, decide whether it warrants a trip to the mechanic, and opt to reset the check engine light if you prefer to remain oblivious to your problem. In this video we see a demonstration of FixDat in action, testing the car of Elizabeth Del Sol (who recently appeared in Mexican Werewolf in Texas) for engine problems.

Andy Clipsham of Palm on the Treo 750

Palm’s new Treo 750 is exciting for a couple of reasons. It’s the first Treo available on Cingular’s network. It uses Windows Mobile instead of the Palm OS (which might be a minus to some, but not us). And it uses Cingular’s 3G network for simultaneous data and voice communication, which comes in handy when checking email and talking on the phone. At CES 2007, Jason Dunn of Thoughts Media interviewed Palm Treo 750 Product Manager Andy Clipsham about the Treo 750 and how Palm will react when Apple’s iPhone hits the cell phone market at some point in the future. As a bonus, here’s a photo comparison of the Treo 750 and other Cingular smartphones, along with screen shots of what Jake considers the coolest feature on the Treo, Threaded SMS.

Ask for Video Help – Get a Video Answer

Gonna try something new here on The Chris Pirillo Show – if we’re even going to keep that name rolling forward (and I’d love your feedback on the subject)…

Please submit your questions and/or comments through this widget, which requires absolutely NO registration on your part – and should work with your Webcam instantly. This new show, of course, will incorporate all our existing sponsors (like GoDaddy and AMD, for example). I made the original “call” for help on YouTube just the other day – and we’ve already doubled our subscriber count by doing so!

Video Voicemail – Help?

Okay, so the idea is taking off… and I think we’re doing something different enough (video calls, not just audio calls, distributed across a variety of online video networks). The interactivity of it is what’s compelling to me – finding ways to make it easier for people to ask questions by webcam and become a part of the program. This doesn’t and shouldn’t replace anything that anybody else happens to be doing, mind you – but there’s a reason I started this on YouTube. We’re trying to prove that online video can be more than a string of insipid pixels, trying to prove that the power of video doesn’t stop after the encoding process.

I’m Old?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Ack. Thpt.

I didn’t know what to get Ponzi for Valentine’s Day. Really, truly. I always seem to pick the “wrong” jewelry and clothing styles when we’re out and about, so I didn’t even bother to go that route. Flowers? No. Chocolates? No. A Nintendo DS Lite – white, to match her iPod (which she did appreciate).

A Peet’s Story

From a Gnomie named Theo…

You keep mentioning Peet’s Coffee Tea and Spices, so here is a story.

Back before the ’seven day war’ in the Mideast, I shopped at Peet’s in Berkeley, CA. He always had good stuff, and the prices were affordable. I recall my like for his mocha java [presumably a blend of mocha coffee and java coffee - not coffee with chocolate flavor]. One day, I bought an bag of whole beans which was put inside another bag, stuffed into my backpack, and then bicycled home. I put the backpack down inside my room and within a minute the whole room smelled of that wonderful coffee. It tasted like heaven, and lifted my spirits the same way.

MoGo Express Card Bluetooth Mouse Video Demo

When traveling, there’s always a tradeoff between convenience and portability. You want all the creature comforts of your office PC, without taking up all the space required to accomplish it. One of the most commonly left behind items is a mouse, because we all seem to find the touchpad on our laptops to be good enough. Newton Peripherals is the first company to come along and offer a viable alternative to mouse portability, providing a functional solution that fits inside your PC Card slot. The MoGo Mouse uses Bluetooth to connect to your PC, is credit card sized and offers a surprisingly functional alternative to mousing with a touch pad. At CES 2007, Jack Corrao of Newton Peripherials gave Jake a quick demo of the original PC Card MoGo, the new Express Card MoGo with scroll wheel and the pint-sized Bluetooth adapter everyone should be dying to any legacy PC that doesn’t have Bluetooth onboard.

TV Didn’t Want Call for Help: Do You?

I can’t wait to see UndoTV spring to life in a few months. Every few days, I’ll get an IM from a PikSpot team member (Scott) asking me for feedback. I’ve seen their next-gen design and it looks amazing – though I’m not sure it’s going to make it into v1.0 of the product. Still, beta testers like long-time Gnomie Mike Chandler are using it already. In preparing for our upcoming launch, I came up with a wacky idea that might not have worked a few years ago.
