Paul Hansen on Hurricane Wilma The Untold Story

While Hurricane Katrina got a great deal of media coverage due to the massive devastation in and around New Orleans in 2005, a number of other significant weather events also had devastating impact. Category 5 Hurricane Wilma hit the Florida Keys in October 2005 flooding the islands and destroying many residences and businesses in the process. Paul Hansen, a local paramedic, remained on hand throughout the storm witnessing the damaging winds and rising water firsthand. Paul and two other videographers recorded many of their experiences throughout the storm, first as the winds and waters started rising and then as they were trapped in their dwellings waiting for the water to recede. Hurricane Wilma The Untold Story is a DVD documenting their experiences throughout the storm, which ultimately led to disaster relief for the local community college and provides a history record for residents of the island. In this segment Chris and Jake talk with Paul Hansen about his experiences and the events leading up to the making of the DVD. You can watch a trailer at the Marrero Studio website.

Weight Loss: Podcast Style

Just got a note from a long-time Gnomie (and owner of Avalon Wine): “Here's a podcast with some really nice, fast sounds that seem to work better for me than other music. And it's sort of neat that the guy keeps making and posting new sequences for running and exercising. He sets them at different numbers of beat per minute so you can go for the burn or take it easier. And I find that this metronome makes it easier to keep my speed up on the machines or when walking.”

Des Moines (Iowa) Geek Meetup?

Ponzi and I will be back in Des Moines for Easter weekend. If y'all wanted to get together on Monday or something, just let me know. Figured we could hit some coffee stand with WiFi – I hear they have one in Altoona, where we'll be staying half the time. Spread the word to other Des Moines area geeks, and I'll start getting the word out on my end. From there, we're off to North Carolina – where we're also planning on gathering with Net friends.

Hugh Forest Executive Director of SXSW

It’s always good to get the perspective of the person responsible for building a show like SXSW to get a sense for where the conference came from and where it’s headed in the future. At SXSW Interactive 2006, Chris talked with Hugh Forest, Executive Director of SXSW, about his thoughts on this year’s event. In addition to touching on some of the show highlights, Chris and Hugh also chat about Austin and what it’s like as both a place of business and a venue for one of the largest annual conference events in the country.
