Apple Computer, Inc. Should Hire Maxxuss, Not Sue Him

I love Woz (he did a wonderful keynote at Gnomedex 4.0 a couple of years ago). He's no longer directly involved with Apple, but Steve Jobs is – in a big way. I just want you to read this tiny piece of history and tell me if one of Apple's impending moves is just a little more than ironic:

Googlefasting

I love a lot of things about Google (especially how they fund many of my advertising-based ventures). I use Google search every minute of every day – or that's what it feels like. I don't like much of their software because of a poor design ethic, but I like what it does for users.
I've been growing increasingly concerned over how Google is starting to do more… and the world is just letting it do more without asking questions (because most users trust the brand blindly). Google is everywhere. I want it to be everywhere, but I also don't want it to be everywhere – because that's very scary. I trust that they will continue to “do no evil” (as opposed to “do know evil?”) – but perhaps there's such a thing as “too big?” I have to prepare for the worst.
In a recent show, I challenged myself to live without Google for a week. Now, this doesn't include tearing down my AdSense blocks (that would be totally insane). So, I'm gonna have to take myself up on this self-inflicted dare. You might think I'd use Gada.be (which is a great metasearch tool), but I'm actually going to use the engines that Gada.be runs upon – like Technorati, MSN, Yahoo!, IceRocket, etc. I'm not doing this to make a political statement – I'm doing it just to see if I can do it.
I'm going to live without searching for anything on Google (or using Google software) for a week… ohmygod.

May a New Schwartz Be with You

Just learned that Cat's preggers. Congrats, my old friend – I know you'll be a wonderful mother. Just don't show your child any of the old tapes with me in them. We wouldn't want him/her to be scarred for life.

Notepad Wars

Why is it that I'm continually looking for a better Notepad clone? Could be that it's so quick to load, and so easy to use. For years, I swore by Metapad, but then development came to a screeching halt. I started to use UltraEdit for a while, but found its upgrade scheme to be a bit on the expensive side (although I'm considering trying it again now that they've moved forward a few versions and the UI is looking better). When I grew tired of UltraEdit, I found PSPad – and have been a prolific user ever since. In recent months, however, the developer (a very cool guy) has moved to a different rendering engine (UNICODE) which has caused a few issues to crop up. I'm sticking with PSPad for the time being – largely because I love the features and have a great relationship with the developer. PSPad does everything I need it to do, although I do wish it could do more.

Jamba Jamming

Today has been the day of beverage vices, apparently. Ponzi just got back from a short shopping trip (where she no doubt doubled her shoe collection). On her way home, she stopped by a Jamba Juice for a mid-evening snack. The store was getting ready to close, but she “squeezed” in an order for the two of us. I'm sitting next to a bladder-busting Protein Berry Pizazz right now. The drink is extremely fruity, relatively cold, and the cup is telling me that my body is a temple. Is that why I only worship it on Sundays, and forget about treating it properly every other day of the week? That's a lie – I never worship my body. What is it with drink cups these days? Why do companies now feel the need to impart wisdom as we sip our way to another belt loop? How's this for a bit o' wisdom for their next round of printing: “Stop ordering the extra large drinks, you fool.” That's not going to stop us, though.

Coffee Addiction

Ponzi decided to make a cup of coffee this morning. As she pulled the cream out of the refigerator, I knew there was no turning back. I wanted some. I needed some. I haven't had any coffee for several months now. Okay, maybe it was more like weeks – but it felt like years. I can't take coffee every day anymore – or every other day for that matter. My heart just can't take it. Of course, if I'm willing to put up with an irregular cardio rhythm and the feeling like I'm going to stop breathing at any moment – I'd pick up coffee again in a… heartbeat. I can't do it. I shouldn't do it. I musn't start drinking coffee again. She's gonna brew another pot tomorrow, and I'll be tempted to take another cup all over again. Damn you, caffeine. Screw you, Bush (sorry, unless I say something political in a post, I don't get many comments).
