Missing Friend: James Kim

I just got word (through Tom Merrit on the TechTV Alumni discussion list) about this. Your help would be greatly appreciated:

CNET editor and former Fresh Gear contributor and Lab analyst James Kim has been missing since Saturday. ANY word, especially from people in the Oregon area is appreciated. The information is all below from the official investigation by the SFPD.

Missing Family Includes: James, Kati, Penelope (age 4.5) and Sabine (6 months). Last name is Kim.

Overview: The Kim Family left San Francisco on November 17th on a road trip to the Pacific Northwest. They had thanksgiving in Seattle with family and then drove to Portland. They were last seen by their friends in Portland who they had brunch with on Saturday, November 25. According to their friends, their plans were to drive out to the town of Gold Beach on the Oregon Coast and then make their way back to San Francisco. James was expected back at work on Tuesday, November 28th. When no one had heard from him by Wednesday morning employees at the Kims’ two stores and his colleagues at CNET began to make phone calls to his family and friends to inquire of his whereabouts. Presently, the SFPD is investigating the case.

If you know anything about James’ whereabouts, you can contact the SFPD by calling 415-558-5508 during normal business hours and 415-553-1071 after hours.

The last known contact from James was at around 5:45 PM on Saturday. A hotel clerk at the Tu Tu Tun lodge in Gold Beach, Oregon took a call from James. He said he was about five hours away. The hotel clerk said she would leave the keys out for them as the lobby would be closed after 10. The keys were still in the same place the next morning. The clerk believes James referred to being near Salem, Oregon at the time.

I hope that they turn up. I’ll be praying for them…

[...] PS. I’m making this public since Leo Laporte broke it and this story will probably be on local news stations anyway. PPS. I’m going to link to some coverage of this if I can. 1) Here’s Tom Merritt’s blog entry about it. 2) Leo posted the same thing that was on his Vox on his TWiT blog. 3) Chris Pirillo posted about it too. tags: jameskim, techtv, cnet Cat: Personal, Current events | Time: 7:11 pm  [...]

Missing Friend: James Kim

[...] Technosphere Rallies To Find Missing Family December 1st, 2006 at 10:50 am by Tony James Kim, one of the Senior CNet editors has gone missing — he was supposed to have returned earlier in the week from a Thanksgiving trip in Seattle, back to his home in San Francisco.  When he didn’t show up for work on tuesday, friends and family got concerned.  The technosphere is rallying behind one of their own right now, with plenty of news sites and blogs picking up the story.  Here’s hoping that the Kim family was merely delayed with the storms hitting the northwest, and returns safe and sound. [...] CNET Editor and Family Missing I don’t usually post stuff like this, but tech journalists take care of their own. CNET Editor James Kim went on a road trip with his family last week. They were supposed to be back Sunday, but haven’t been heard from since. There are conflicting reports on where he was last seen, with CNET reporting Saturday in Seattle, and Engadget and the official police report say they were in Portland on Saturday. Either way, they were driving a 2005 silver Saab station wagon with California personalized plates of “DOESF.” Those with information about the Kim family’s whereabouts are asked to contact the SFPD immediately at (415) 558-5508 during normal business hours and at (415) 553-1071 after-hours. The Portland Police Department can be reached at (503) 823-4000. We at Windows-Now are praying for their safe return. We’ll keep you posted. UPDATE: Chris Pirillo has more information: The last known contact from James was at around 5:45 PM on Saturday. A hotel clerk at the Tu Tu Tun lodge in Gold Beach, Oregon took a call from James. He said he was about five hours away. The hotel clerk said she would leave the keys out for them as the lobby would be closed after 10. The keys were still in the same place the next morning. KATI AND THE TWO CHILDREN HAVE BEEN FOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JAMES IS STILL MISSING THOUGH.. ;(

http://www.jamesandkati.com/guestbook/

CNN is just now reporting that his wife and kids have been found - seem okay - airlifted to hospital.

James left to find help two days ago… they’re still looking for him.

Prayers.

just read that Jame’s family was found and airlifted to the hospital, but they haven’t found James yet.
Let’s keep good thoughts going.

I just received this update from the Oregon Police update service:

“Search efforts have continued around-the-clock for JAMES KIM who was last seen leaving the location where his vehicle was found by searchers Monday afternoon. KIM was reported by his wife to have left their car Saturday, December 2nd, at 7:45 a.m. in attempt to obtain help. He failed to return at the pre-determined time of 1:00 p.m.

Approximately 100 individuals are involved with the search efforts focusing on the Big Windy Creek Drainage about 30 miles of Grants Pass north of Bear Camp Road. Elevation in the area is about 3,000 feet. According to Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, the section of focus is a 5 mile long canyon and is about five miles from where the car was found.”

I am hoping that he just got lost.

James Kim is certainly on my heart and mine. I have been praying for his safe return since his wife and kids were found.

Searchers found what they believe to be James Kims pants…are hoping its a sign of some kind. I’m in Portland Oregon…it’s 4:00PM here and soon will be dark again…clear skys…should be about 20 to 30 degrees up there tonight. We’re all crossing our fingers and saying our prayers for the Kim family.

I did not no this but James is from my hometown (Louisville KY). That brings the situation even closer to home. James and all the old TechTV gang are like family. We in Louisville are all wishing the best.

My heart goes out to the Kim family. I prayed everyday once they announced James’ disappearance. I’m glad his family is safe.

I….can’t believe it.

…he’s dead. I..my gosh. I’m so saddened right now.

James Kim body found reports CNN - he is no longer with us…

CNN is reporting that rescuers searching for James Kim may have in fact spotted his body. There is no word at this time if he still with us or not. A news conference was just held. It looks as if the news is not good. Another conference will be held in…

Found dead about 3pm EST.

Sadly, the body of James Kim was found just after noon today PST. Keep the family in your thoughts during this difficult time. There’s just nothing left to say. :(

Sorry to hear that he has been found dead. Rest in peace.

I just saw on People.com that they found James Kims body. Oh my goodness my heart sank and tears ran down my face. I can not imagine what his family and friends are going through. I don’t know James or his family, but just hearing everything on the news had me praying for him and his family. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I’m sick to my stomach about the news about James’ passing.

So long James buddy. I watched you regularly on TechTV and you seemed liked a decent, straight-up guy. The tech. world needs more like you.

The authorities have confirmed that James Kim was found. They have reported he did not make it. The friends and family respectfully request that the media refrain from contact during this time to allow us time to be together as friends and family in peace.

I am saddend by the events that has surrounded this family. Today
the body of James Kim was found in the Oregon mountains. He showed such bravery to set out on foot to find help for his family. I am so sorry that it has turned out to be so tragic.
Our thoughts and prayers for the Kim family.

i’ve spent alot of time in that area, up and down the Rogue river, and was stuck in the snow myself, but wasn’t that far from homesteads. It was very cold, wet, and lonely. And you can’t see very far in the morning fogs. My heart is heavy for James. I hope he knows he was in our thoughts and prayers, and that his family has survived. Very sorry for everyones’ loss.

This is an incredibly tragic story.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Does anyone know if his SAAB was equiped with ON-STAR? If it was, why didn’t it work?

I prayed for James to be rescued safely, as a lot of people did. I am sad to here the outcome. I loved to watch “Call For Help”, and I still have a bunch of shows recorded on VHS. You and the Kim family are welcome to have them for the memories. I wish there was more I could do.

I wasn’t very impress with the CEC centre we went to. So now I’ve to break the not-so-good news to the other Kindy. And then on Friday, I came across the sad news via Mooiness about James Kim’s family rescue and his tragic death. I first read about them being missing from Chris Pirillo’s blog the week before. They were supposed to be back from a road trip at the end of November, but by 1 December there was no sign of their return. I don’t know James Kim personally, but I knew him from his TechTv days on Call For
