WOW. That ranks up there with Bill Gates saying how stable Windows XP is and suddenly a blue screen came up. Microsoft would do better by being opensource, at least you would have real peer review you did your work!!
A demo like this reminds me of the old-timey newsreels of guys with wings strapped to their backs jumping off barns. I always wonder why they didn’t test the cam contraptions before inviting the newsreel cameras.
The grimmest of these was a fellow who jumped off the Eiffel Tower in 1912. He had something that he expected would work like the cape that Batman wears. Instead of a graceful and dramatic glide to a soft landing, he dropped straight down. Instead of measuring the distance of his flight (horizontally), they measured the depth of the crater he made. You can see the snuff film on YouTube here:
There’s a little background about it here:
Consolation for anyone whose demo crashes (as many of mine have)… you can still walk away.
Turns out, though, that in both cases you can wind up on YouTube.
BTW: As my friend Michael Witlin reminds me, Apple was successfully demonstrating speech recognition in echo-filled auditoriums back in Sculley days.
This from a guy that has seen a few MS demos:
In a roomful of analysts and reporters, Boettcher tried to write a letter to his mother on Vista, using only his voice. The result was one of the worst Microsoft product demonstrations in recent memory.

The real reason Bill is calling it quits. The stress from these live demos is probably killing him!
You’d think they’d learn already and tape the things.
