Mapping the Mind

Dave Winer just released The DocNography Tool Howto, after a successful round at BloggerCon. Great minds think alike! While we won’t be using the OPML Editor for our mind mapping management, we will be using MindJet MindManager – projecting it onto a screen at the front of the room, and then making the files availble for anybody to download and view. It’s really too bad that MindManager doesn’t export OPML quite yet. I first fell in love with the idea back when I saw Marc Orchant put it into play at the original MSN Search Champs summit. He took our groups ideas and transformed them into a visually stunning, organized cloud of information.

Gnomedex Sex

Susan Mernit wants to talk about sex at Gnomedex:

I’m going to be talking about sex and relationships at Gnomedex this year–specifically about the bloggers, vbloggers, podcasters and photographers who are using Web 2.0 tools to give voice to their longings and experiences with a vitality unmatched since the Victorian era and the communities forming around these topics. This isn’t a talk about porn, though much of this work is erotic; it’s a talk about how digital identities (masked and cloaked in many cases) have enabled regular people–many of them geeks–to build a frank and authentic shadow world focused on free expression, sharing, and sexual celebration–and to connect with one another.

Wired on Wired

I remember the first time I ever saw WIRED magazine – back when I was pirillc2770@cobra.uni.edu (in the early ’90s). It was pure literary awesomeness. Evan Hansen stumbled upon ‘freedbacking’ somehow, and wanted to know a little more about it. I’m still not sure the idea has legs, but I’ll have a super-simple Freedbacking.com set up some time after Gnomedex. From Are You ‘Freedbacking’?:

Tweak Flash Player Settings

I discovered this through preparing my TagJag presentation, prompted by Ken Rossi. If you’ve ever wanted more control of your Flash Player, you have to visit the Flash Player Settings Manager on Adobe’s site. I had no idea this even existed, and I’m baffled why this Flash control panel isn’t embedded directly within the player itself! Change Global and Site-centric Privacy, Storage, Security, and Notification settings. You can get to it from the Macromedia Flash Player Settings “Advanced” button on the Privacy tab, but it’s not nearly as intuitive as what’s found on their Manager page. Adobe, here’s a bit of freedbacking for you!

Dinner’s On Us

Everybody knows we feed you well at Gnomedex (in fact, our breakfasts have now been officially sponsored). Lunch is provided, and there are snacks and drinks throughout the entire day at the conference center. However, we also scored some nice food for your dinner meals. Ponzi’s taking a well-deserved nap right now, but I hope to post details of the food we’re serving you on Saturday night. We couldn’t find a sponsor to cover our Friday night party, but that didn’t keep us from making it a kick-ass spread:

Net Neutrality is Dead

I have one word for y’all: Ouch:

Senate panel narrowly rejected strict Net neutrality rules on Wednesday, dealing a grave setback to companies like eBay, Google and Amazon.com that had made enacting them a top political priority this year. By an 11-11 tie, the Senate Commerce Committee failed to approve a Democrat-backed amendment that would have ensured all Internet traffic is treated the same no matter what its “source” or “destination” might be. A majority was needed for the amendment to succeed.

Server Move

As stated in last night’s Windows Fanatics Lockergnome report, we’re moving servers – and a lot of things might not work well for a couple of days. I believe we’ll be good to go by Gnomedex, and I realize this was horrible timing on our part. The discussion lists are non-functional for the time being, so I’d hope that if you were subscribed to any one of them, you also subscribe to my personal space. I’m using Ecto for Windows to post this update and… so far, I’m not at all impressed with Ecto. I don’t understand why everybody and their grandmother has been recommending it?! w.Bloggar is infinitely better – even though I’d be willing to pay for a fantastic and fast desktop blogging client.

Best Conference T-Shirt Ever

Okay, you know how most conference t-shirts suck? They’re splashed with sponsor logos and no fun to wear on Casual Fridays. Who really cares that you were at “Fast Food Fest ‘99″?! I have a million and one of those types of t-shirts in my closet, and they all get thrown into the “donate to Goodwill” pile at the end of the year. Sorry, but I’m not interested in being a walking NASCAR chassis. Last year, we got a little geeky with the “Feed Me” shirt. This year, we’re totally stylin’ with a shirt that says it all without saying anything:

Camtasia Studio is not CamStudio

Chad Wandler (from Split Rock Communications) was listening to the stream from BloggerCon this weekend, overhearing me answering a question about screencasts. For clarification purposes, he informed me that Camtasia Studio and CamStudio have nothing to do with each other and never have. Per the CamStudio’s History site:

BloggerCon was Awesome

BloggerCon was awesome. I only have a few regrets, all of which are my fault: (1) This was my first BloggerCon experience;(2) I had Windows Vista on my laptop, which drained my battery at an alarming rate; (3) We had to leave early and miss the final Hokey Pokey. Dave says he’s going to quit blogging soon, but I hope he doesn’t stop doing BloggerCons.
