G4 is a Big, Fat Loser

Per the article posted today in TG Daily, Xfire gaming network to be acquired by Viacom, rolled into MTV Networks, comes a biting statement about the G4 network:
Viacom’s competitor in the cable arena, Comcast, is the owner of the newly semi-redubbed G4TV network, which was originally devoted 100% to video games, but has recently branched out to, shall we say, unique forms of “interactive television,” including repackaged reruns of the original Star Trek series with added graphics that interact with…themselves. Ratings numbers give G4TV the unlucky distinction of being the least viewed basic cable network in America - less than evangelistic channels, less than third-rate shopping channels.
Holy sh*t… dead last? I don’t know whether to laugh or to cry, quite honestly. I loved being at TechTV, and I believe there’s still a place for technology on the television screen. This news is really too bad, as it’s likely to discourage any other network to pick up the ball and run with it. Talented geeks are hard to come by - and even when they can be found, you have to be willing to pay for their services.

After you left TechTV and they changed Screensavers to “Attach of the Show” it all went downhill. G4 really ruined the whole thing. Even the site became crappy. I am not sure but I think techTV was bought by G4, right Chris?
Ever since then it went downhill. It is a damn Shame they had a goo thing and ruined it.

It is pitiful what g4tv has become. It tried to redeem itself by putting leo and the crew back on with call for help, but that has disappeared like every other good show that was on. I’m talking about Kevin Rose when he hsoted the screensavers along with Leo laporte and when call for help was done by the legend of the tech world Chris Pirillo and so forth. I cant even bear to watch 10 seconds of the network anymore. They have no talent left on the network, they need a major revamp and a clean slate to start over.

I was madly in love with TechTV, once upon a time. I bought a TiVo on Leo Laporte’s recommendation, and have never regretted it. And then I discovered Call for Help with Chris Pirillo, and I learned more about my PC in a few months than I had in the 5 years previous. I loved TechTV, LOVED it…
..and then we lost Chris, and eventually Leo and Patrick Norton, when G4 came in and really mucked things up…. it got to the point where I wrote my cable company (Time Warner) to tell them that I was very unsatisfied with the channel, and was cancelling my digital cable service because the one channel I loved above all else, had mutated into something ugly.
I’d love to hear more about your experiences at TechTV, Chris, back in the good old days. And of course, we’d love to hear how it all ended for you and TechTV, all the dirt about how you all got along (or didn’t)…
Still, to this day, one of my favorite clips is my video capture of my appearance on webcam with you on Call For Help… that was a lotta fun for a geek like me!
anyway, sorry to ramble. Carry on!

Dude, as far as I’m concerned “Call for Help” was best show TechTv had, although I did like alot of the other shows.
When they got rid of your show all I could say was, WTF!
My wife and I loved “Call for Help”, we never missed an episode.
Death to G4Tv!

Don’t compare TechTV to G4. There is no comparison. TechTV was about spreading knowledge. It was about interacting with its audience. It was about good programming and speaking with important people in the technology field. You learned something of value. Yeah, they weren’t perfect but a lot of people loved the network. Many of the old TechTV crew have gone onto to Cnet and other places, or like Leo do their own thing. Good for them. If they’d stayed with G4TV they would go down with a sinking ship.
G4 is about some gaming, a bunch of adult hosts who try to act like smart-alec kids, and constant sexual innuendo humor. It’s almost like SpikeTV in many ways, another network I avoid. G4 thinks if they throw a few hot chicks at the kids and replace likeable people like the TechTV crew and former G4TV regular Diane Mizota, that they will live long and prosper. I guess *** and broads isn’t working as planned for the brass at G4TV. Eat that Comcast.

As far as I am concerned it was all over when TechTV merged with G4. What’s sad is I convinced my mom to upgrade to digital cable and get the package that contained TechTV just so I could watch The Screensavers and also watch Chris everyday on Call for Help, I thought it was so cool, The Lockergnome himself on TV. Ugh, those were the days, I don’t even watch G4 really anymore unless Star Trek is on, or there’s nothing better to watch 500+ channels and nothing but ****. Even Sci Fi bugs me sometimes with all those lame Monster movies. Come on, where’s Godzilla.

G4 I never those that their programming was all the great, I am a gamer but dont want to watch shows about gaming 24-7. I wad watch all the Techtv shows at least once and most of them I felt like I had more brains then before I seen that show. Were as with the G4 I felt like I got nothing new from the show. Oh yeah, after G4 TTV went down hill. Yoshi had done a toothbrush mod, WTF!?! No case mods or Hardware mods (I think he used an old mobo to cook some eggs, but not really a mod), no nothing. I even miss Leo going off on a tangent when someone mentions that they as a child. Miss Chris’s willingness and over the top enthusiasm, Miss Patrick and his kilt, in general miss the knowledge gained from watching TTV.

BRING BACK TECHTV!!!! WTF?!?! I was very suprised that no one, other than the people of at G4 came running to snatch up TechTV and all of its talented staff. There is a PLACE for it and someone with the VC should start it up again and get the same people back!! Including you Chris!!!! The main reason why I have extended Sat service was for TechTV and now seeing where G4 has gone….I dunno if extended service is worth it. BRING TECHTV BACK YOU IDIOTS!!!!!!

Let me update my last post. G4 did not take all of the talented people from TechTV, which was mainly the reason why they are doing poorly now. I just wished someone would’ve continued the channel as it was, as TechTV. Please, please, someone do it!

But everything I could say Fred already covered. Thanks Fred

The “new” G4TV is the WORST piece of trash I have seen. I’m suprised they’re still on the air! How can they survive showing three incarnations of Star Trek (Star Trek, ST:Next Generation, Star Trek2.0), The Man Show, Fastlane, Street Fury, Action Blast, Banzai, etc. Who are they trying to appeal to? They don’t listen to their viewers. They just plain suck! I get my tech info from the internet and bypass that ****!!

[...] It’s not from Wikipedia. This is the original source of the comments, as linked to by Chris Perillo: http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/04.....iacom/EDIT: Oops, beat me to it. Also, here’s Chris’s article (an obviously bitter one, based on the URL), which is also a bit out of date.http://chris.pirillo.com/2006/06/07/g4-is-a-big-fat-loser/Keep in mind, the original article is dated late April, weeks before E3. E3 got G4 the highest ratings since the channel launched ages ago. But in reality, a “good week” for G4 is still a disaster. Edited: Thursday June 15, 2006 at 4:54 PM by carnicero [...]

It’s truly a shame. I only began to start liking TechTV the very week before it became G4TechTV. I don’t watch any television. at all. but I watched that. It gave purpose to having cable. G4TechTV was even alright, i watched The Screensavers regularly until it became Attack of the Show. I tried to like that, i really did. and some episodes of that were educational. I honestly found it to be the last remaining remnant of TechTV (excluding XPlay, which is arguably the only current good show on G4), and watched it for the first month or two. then it went downhill. they replaced the reports that they had about new updates to mozilla firefox, game mods in general, viral videos and other various things that i found useful with reports about beer, ***, and violence. they traded their hosts, their intellegence, and ultimately their souls for what they thought would rake in more profit.
For shame, G4. For shame.

I see how you feel, I quit watching when they did the whole g4techtv merge. At first I thought it would be a great idea. Take two things I love and put it together, but instead of doing the reeses peanut butter cup move and taking the best of both shows, they fired everyone I liked (save Morgan and Adam) and took the shows I liked off the air.
Now its Cops, Star Trek, Cheaters???? I thought we already had a SpikeTV. I figured they would have wrestling on there soon (I was an avid wrestling fan back in the day) but with ratings like they have now, who in their right mind would touch that.

It all started going downhill once G4 took over. I do admit, wayyyyy at the very beginning I liked G4. It once had some very intresting and creative shows such as G4Tv.Com, Icons, and many other original shows I enjoyed. But it was when the new president took over that G4 came crumbling down. The old Icons, G4Tv.Com, Cinematec, Filter, Icons, and TONS of other shows were immidiatly cancelled. EVEN X-Play, the greatest show on G4 was changed drasticly and negativly. The network “Wants To Appeal To All Audiences” and thus The Man Show, Star Trek, The LAME New Icons And Filters, Cops and many other pointless shows have been added. G4, a network that is SUPPOSED to be all about video games, will only have about 3-6 shows even about video games in its entire 24-hour block. I’m suprised they are still calling it “Video-Game Television”. EVERY network has only ONE major topic that should appear on it. I don’t watch Food Network to hear about the international news, I don’t watch ESPN to learn about sea lions and their habitat, and I DON’T watch G4 to see shows about ***, drugs, and aliens. G4 will soon die, and become another Spike ripoff. G4 has even stooped low enough, to where they will ACTUALLY COVER FOR 1 ENTIRE WEEK an adult entertainment expo. Hell, even when they have their E3 coverage, it mainly talks about product placement and topics having nothing to do with video games. G4 was doomed to fail the minute it bought TechTV, and soon enough, it will. BRING BACK TECHTV!!! DOWN WITH ALL OF G4!!!!!!! (Except X-Play if they can revert back to the way it was)

I never got G4 until i switched to Comcast, and even before that I didn’t watch Techtv, but once I watched Screensavers, I loved it, and on the boring summer mornings when NOTHING ELSE was on, G4 did have Cinematec, Icons, G4tv.com, Filter (when they actually counted down games, not friggin top 10 *** toys)and that goofy arcade game show to keep me occupied. When the merge came about I thought it was a cool idea, and I even liked Attack of the Show (I still watch it) but as far as the whole Cops, Man show ****, GET RID OF IT. I want to see the newest hardware, and how to over clock the newest technology…..not red necks shooting up with their kids. I’m surprised the owner of G4 hasn’t seen this thread and say i himself “hmmm maybe I should switch back over to the normal programs.” I think we should all head down to the G4tv building and demand a change.

My brother learned tons of stuff about computers from techtv and probably wouldn’t be the geek he is today without it. I was too young for a while to really get techtv until a fear years ago. But then they went and replaced all those educational shows with pitiful trash. I’d probably be ten times more of a computer geek if they didn’t fire all the smart people and bring in shows that actually make people less intelligent. Do you think theres ever a chance of starting from a clean slate and bringing back all those great geeks for a great television network again?

term plan involves adding it to the MTV channel lineup as a gaming network. If this happens, it will easily outrank G4 on its first day, as G4 is currently the least viewed basic television channel in all of America. This fact alone was enough to getChris Pirillo to say “sh*t”on his blog. Considering that G4 has been nothing but a money pit so far, it seems that it’s death is inevitable. No matter how many dollars G4 puts towards promotion, or towards buying syndicated shows, it still comes in dead last.

From the first day that I happened to channel surf across TechTV, it was my favorite group of shows . Even people who were totally different loved those shows. When someone nearly your complete opposite tells his wife that TechTV is the best channel on cable, you HAVE to be at least a little afraid! : -{
Then… G4 began an unbelievable nightmare.
