Watching Microsoft from New York

If you work with Microsoft products on a regular basis, it’s a good idea to keep up with what they are working on. One woman keeps a critical eye on Redmond, watching for all the latest developments and aggregating them in one tidy location. Mary Jo Foley has been tracking Microsoft for 10 years, breaking news good and bad at Microsoft Watch. Chris managed to capture her thoughts on IE 7, Longhorn and the future of Linux at Microsoft during a MSN party tied to SES.

FCUK Me!

While in NYC, Ponzi got me a skull cap from FCUK. Yes, I had to do a double-take the first time she said it to me, too. I've seen FCUK stores before, but I thought its name was just a cruel joke. Turns out, it's for real – and I've received three “for real” compliments on this particular piece of headwear in the past week. The last one from my Tall Soy Mocha One-Pump No-Whip maven at the local Starbucks. On my way home, I decided to share with you my many FCUKing moods.
Here I am, FCUKing thinking about something:

And now I'm FCUKing angry:

But I can be FCUKing happy at times, too:

As well as really FCUKing sad:

I guess I'm just FCUKing silly:

From Texas Hold’em to Texas Tea – Meet the Oilman

It’s not every day you get to meet a spammer. While we didn’t actually spot a live one in the wild, Chris talked at length with a guy who used to post Viagra and Texas Hold’em links in blog comments across the Web. Todd “Oilman” Friesen has since cleaned up his act, instead employing years on the dark side of the biz to helping companies figure out how to reach their audience in the search space the right way. His company Oilman Promotions is among the best in the field at search engine marketing tactics. Listen in for the Oilman’s thoughts on the future of tagging spam, the pointless nature of the nofollow tag and more. For a guy we’ve virtually cursed in the past, his opinions on the biz seem spot on.

Dino Ironbody

Okay, we've obviously started leaking details about this year's Gnomedex. I've been asked about keynote presenters… but Wil Wheaton is probably too busy doing his CSI thing now. I heard about this killer new blogger named Dino Ironbody – has anybody ever met him in real life? I think he may make an excellent keynote for one day of the conference. If we can't get ahold of Dino, who else should be speaking at Gnomedex this time around? What about presentations, sponsors, demos? Right now, we're set to offer attendees unlimited food and beverage throughout the day (breakfast, lunch, snacks, soda, coffee, candy, fruit, Starbucks-bean coffee, bottled water, etc.) – but the nights are completely open. We've gotta hit the Web to find a couple of nighttime party / BOF room sponsors, so any kind of direction would be appreciated.
This is as much your conference as it is ours.

Nofollow and Tags

According to one of the interviews we did at SES, nofollow isn't really going to work – largely because it targets dead sites. If once-living pages include the nofollow tag, eventually spammers might stop attacking all of us on the Web. Then, according to one of the panelists we saw, tagging is going to fall victim to spamming soon enough. I (honestly) believe that will happen. One day in the not-so-distant future, wikis will come under spam attack, too. It's all in the name of Search Engine linkage – so, who's to blame? The spammers are just exploiting weaknesses in the system. It's one reason I had to turn off live comments and trackbacks across Lockergnome's channels. I deal with enough spam in my inbox. My feeds, however, are still spam free – and will remain that way from now until the end of time.

FTP Discount

A Gnomie by the name of Chester Tan sent this to me a few minutes ago:

My first piano music album was launched in Singapore, and I'm already working on my next album! Anyway, here's another article for your purview:
Evaluate CuteFTP Pro 6 and get 50% discount!
I was using CuteFTP Professional 6 trial version for a month. When it expired, I thought of uninstalling the software and using SmartFTP, which although has a more buggy interface, is free. After I closed CuteFTP, a survey form popped out. Usually I do not fill up such software surveys, but something told me to just complete it. Some questions I was asked include: are you happy with the software, will you be buying the software, why do you not want to purchase, etc. For the last question, I selected 'Price' as a factor for not purchasing.
And guess what: on the next screen, I was offered a one-time 50% discount on the software – that's US$29.99 for the professional license! I was so pleasantly surprised that I bought it straightaway. That is one fantastic move by Globalscape!
So, if you guys wanna enjoy the same discount, install the trial version and get it!

Goodonya, FTP folks. I'm currently using Filezilla for my FTP client.

The Web Site Idea Generator

Sacremende

According to a recent report on Fox television, the city of Sacremende (California) doesn't exist. I beg to differ. I used to spend my summers in Sacremende as a child. It was a fine city, and not terribly expensive for middle class families. It's a Beach Resort, really. There were five championship golf courses, 13 world-class tennis courts, a full-service marina (with your own yacht port for the yacht you don't own), plenty of water sports, charter sailing and fishing, designer and outlet shopping, fine and causal dining, state-of-the-art fitness center, etc. Over 9 miles of beach and bayfront made it the best resort on the planet. Sacremende, I hardly knew ye.

Searching for Danny Sullivan

When you need someone with their finger on the pulse of the search engine business, Danny Sullivan always tops the list. He’s been covering the search engine business since 1995 when he released “A Webmaster’s Guide to Search Engines.” His site, SearchEngineWatch, is the definitive resource on the entire search engine space. Using all the people search skills in his tool chest, Chris finally tracked down Danny immediately following a session where he grabbed a few sage words from the search master.
