Kiss My ASCII

I love how everybody whines when they don't get their way - it's human nature. So, for all of you who unsubscribed from my RSS feed because it wasn't the way you wanted it (even though you're not the one providing it or paying for it), then you won't ever know that I considered going back to full feeds. Not because of WHY you complained, but that you DID complain - and I think it's kinda funny that everybody else will enjoy what you've decided to leave behind… because this entry *GASP* is a full entry in the feed. Did you know that, or were you one who cut off his/her nose to spite your face? ;) I still believe that 90% of the galaxy still doesn't understand the argument - and they don't care.

No problemo. Wave hello to my friendly full-feed generating Net::LWP/XML::RSS bot that will agregate your content to my heart's content :-)

We never left Chris… I keep telling you “everybody” doesn't do “anything”. Nice to see you in my aggregator again. I'll still click through - I promise.

Wow! What a jerk!

Is your RSS Feed for you or your audience?

Hey Chris…ping me. I've got something interesting for you.
The whole full feed - partial feed thing has become a battle between making money vs not. This isn't right. Personally I think full feeds are best, but you take it on the chin if you have ads and are mostly ad-supported.
The arguement to be able to read post while offline is legit. The arguement to be able to earn a living is legit.
There is another way.

“Is your RSS Feed for you or your audience?” .. I see it this way, Blogs and their RSS feeds are that persons journals that they don't mind sharing with others.. So in a way it's really for the person writing it.. At least thats how I feel about mine.
It's just a place to post what you are thinking about at that time, its not a place to try to be entertaining, they just are. =)
Oh and Chris, I'm one of the ones who complained, but I never left =) I adapted to the format as I allways do.

Yay for the return of full feeds. :)

On the off chance that you are actually serious with this post Chris (as opposed to sarcasm or trying to drive up readership via controversy), I would like for you to imagine that a broadcast TV exec sent out a press release written like your post, responding to viewer criticisms regarding programming. How would you perceive it?
Regarding the “argument”, I probably am part of the 90% that don't get it but I sometimes wonder if you are in the 90% as well.
You seem to concentrate on the “I can't provide the content if I don't get the revenue” part of the equation. But doesn't the loop look something more like this:?
Content > Readership > Ad revenue > Content
By the way, put that crappy TV show back on your TIVO schedule because it could get better! :)

Thank you for considering the full feed thing again. I still do click through on the full feeds (probably more often than the 5-word feeds when I see something that interests me and I want to see what comments have been left. It's a lot tougher to get my interest enough to want to click through with the short feed.
Thanks,
Dave

So what happened to the whole “Full-Text Feeds are Dead” phase? I thought you didn't care if people unsubscribed from your feeds. Did you finally realize that your readers are more important than your ego?

That's not the reason we all unsubscribed, Chris. The reason we unsubscribed is because we can no longer stand your worthless, ego-driven blabber on our screens. It would be nice to see you grow up one day and become a man, but that's a stretch. What a waste of bandwidth you've become. On a sidenote, to the (2 or 3) asskissers that continue to repeatedly post meaningless brown nose remarks in support of anything and everything Chris spews, find another hero.

You're absolutely right. How dare anyone unsubscribe from something that is provided for free. Of course with that logic we should all be happy if we are lucky enough to get herpes. Your content has become about equal to the crappy coupons we all have to sort through to find our real mail. Just not worth the time, and hardly worth reading. I'd recommend you go back to Iowa and take up insurance. If they'd have you back in that state.

I agree, I agree. Behold he has spoken!

Hang in there dude. Full text or not, I'm still clicking on the post to see who commented and trackedback. And since your ads are useful I click them.

See, Chris? Size really does matter. :)

It wasn't that you weren't providing full-text feeds, Chris. It was that your blurbs did not do an adequate job of describing what the entry was actually about! Thus, it became very frustrating to subscribe to your feed because I would have to click through to every post, which defeats the purpose of having a feed in the first place…of course it does generate click-throughs to your site, I suppose…

For the record, I dropped your blog because of the obnoxious wanna-be-hand-written font :0

I don't mind partial quote feeds, but I usually turn back to visiting the main page of the blog when it happens. I think what bothered me was that didn't work either in your case because of the link a roo main page where the entries didn't show on the main page either. (I admit I'm a lazy clicker and it was too many clicks in this case)

Wow, relax folks. Its just a silly tech blog. I admit I have been a Lockergnome guy from day one…. but I can't say I read much it on a regular basis, full feed or not.

It's funny how these nerds get their panties all in a wad. SFW? Oh well, it's amusing for about 5 minutes.

For the record, I dropped your blog because of the obnoxious wanna-be-hand-written font :0
It was the lines which did it for me. Can't stand them.

How convenient all you anonymous posters throwing insults. Don't use the 'can't log in' excuse either- you can still sign your names. If you're gonna be rude or tell people to go back to where they came from, at least have the decency to admit to it without doing pseudo-anonymous internet posts - which is lame and cowardly.

And as the html didn't quite work, my web address is andymerrett.co.uk - not to get free hits, but so you can find me and flame me if you so desire - but keep it in context.

Thanks Chris, I really appreciate you doing this for 'us'.

Chris,
1) Thanks for returning to full feeds. I appreciate it.
2) “Wide” people like me have a saying: “Don't go food shopping or eat prunes when you are famished.”
3) Some “fatherly”(I'm old) advice : Don't blog when angry. And ignore your anonymous critics.

Uh… I was never even a reader.. and the font would be the problem.. but now that I see how much of a cry baby you can be I'm actually glad I never read your stuff.

Thanks for the full-text feeds, Chris.

I'm still subscribed!

And in doing the obvious right thing, you somehow still manage to sound like a whiny *****?

I understand both sides of the dicussion and fully support both sites that have full feeds and those that choose partial feeds.
Partial feeds are fine if they are done correctly:
1. Partial feeds must have titles/abstracts created by a human, not just the first few lines of the post! Nothing makes me hit the delete button faster then a partial-feed that has no actual content.
2. Partial feeds should never include ads. I will happily deal with the ads when I go to your site to read the full post.
3. Always include direct links to read/post comments. (Yea, this applies just as well to full feeds.)
For chris.prillo.com I am very happy that you you are providing full feeds (and I will gladly welcome google ads in the rss to keep full feeds) mainly because I get a headache trying to read your blog directly. The yellow notepad background is bad enough, but the huge font on top of it just kills me! Just look how much easier it is to read the comments because they are on a white background! :p
