Know Ye This

We're moving this blog over to another server at some point today. I'd put up “Under Construction” graphics, but those are tacky and my page is already overly yellow. I hope the move goes smoothly. We'll see what happens. This is not a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. *BEEEEEP* UPDATE: If you're reading this message, then you're visiting my new location on the Internet. Same Web address, different server. Things should be much faster around here. I lost some comments in the crossover, but that's a small price to pay. That is all.

Mea Culpa

Remember my idea of a Start Menu-based newsfeed parser? I'm sure countless software developers are feverishly working on one – but Dave was the first one to cross the finish line, and I hadn't said anything about it until now. So, here's a very public THANK YOU to the guy who has made my world easier to deal with on a daily basis. I couldn't get my OPML file to import, but Scoble let me borrow his. Looks like NewsGator isn't 1.1 compliant. Does anybody have a simple conversion tool for me? Regardless, consider my subscription to Radio renewed, and my faith in Winer's ability to deliver usable features completely renewed.

I'm No Superman

Did I just hear them advertising “Magic Rattle Poo” on TV?! I think they were referring to the tubby little cubby all stuffed with fluffy. Anyway, I thought you might benefit from the advice that Robyn sent at 10:30 this morning: “(1) Do not. I repeat. Do not watch Oprah. Sure it starts innocently enough. What could the harm be in just one quick episode about decorating on a budget? Bad idea. It's a trap. Ruuuuuuuun! Before you know it, you'll have Oprah and Dr. Phil on simultaneously in picture-in-picture. (2) Only one bag of chips a week. Trust me on this. Do not eat while staring at the monitor, or you'll be down to tiny chip slivers before you even finish the front page of CNN – and won't remember how you got there. (3) No reality TV unless monitored by the employed. (4) TLC is right out, unless watching 'Trading Spaces' or 'While You Were Out.' (5) MTV is not the same channel it was when we were in college. “Beavis and Butthead” were canceled.” To tell you the truth, I kept quite busy – and tomorrow will be just as jam-packed with fun. I plan on walking around the house in my underwear. I may “accidently” leave the Webcam on. Gotta watch tonight's Scrubs now.

I'm Still Alive

I'd say that I'm at a loss for words, but that wouldn't be correct. I posted a somewhat-extended entry in today's Windows Daily. Still, I can't tell you everything about what's going on – and I believe you understand why. In due time, all will be revealed. Until then, “touch your tongue to mine – to make it all official.” Keep the comments coming in, too – I see 'em all. I'm working feverishly to respond to my e-mails. If you get a wink from me, that's two more characters than… none? Ah, I've always been bad at math.

As of today, I will no longer be with TechTV… 'cause I'm movin' on up… to…? ;)

Okay, I'm Listed on BlogShares. Now what?

I Hate IE6!

I don't know what's causing the anomaly, but apparently people with Internet Explorer 6.0 (SP1) are having issues with viewing this page. If the text / graphics are coming up blurry, I apologize. It's annoying! UPDATE: I think I've fixed the blur problem, but now it seems someone's messed with my color palette! UPDATE II: The blur is back, and now my page keeps ejecting CD trays. UPDATE III: I've fixed the CD-ROM bug, but I can't seem to lick the blur. UPDATE IV: The CD ejector problem has returned, and will not go away until the comments stream for this post hits 150 entires from unique visitors. UPDATE V: Looks as though the blur has gone away. However, now I can't view my blog unless I have a mirror and I stand on my head while using it. UPDATE VI: This page is no longer upside-down. UPDATE VII: My wife is officially 0wned; look now or forever not understand what this means.

Switching to Mozilla

After getting a false bounce from my Brother (via MailWasher), I thought it was time I learned how to use the junk mail features in Mozilla's mail client. After a little fussing, I was able to get it to work – quite admirably, might I add. I don't know how they do it, but this is pretty darn slick. I think I'm ready to start recommending this over Outlook Express. And who knows? If Microsoft screws up the next version of Outlook (proper), I may just move mail management to Mozilla myself.

A Day in the Life

(1) Update on Mandrake 9.1 installation: smooth as silk, and the OS is supremely impressive. Finally, a usable Linux desktop! (2) I spent most of the day trying to figure out how to get this to work with our entertainment system; ultimately, I installed a WinTV PCI card in G's computer and things are running smooth as silk. It's something that'll completely destroy Microsoft's Media Center PC in no time flat. (3) We've decided to drop digital cable; the only reason we have it is for TechTV, which I never watch anyway. I think I killed the decoder with my tinkering, anyway. (4) We spied the Sony DVP NS315 DVD Player at a local electronics store today; it supports DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW (video mode), CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3 CDs – for around $99. Although, if they have a SLV-D100, I may just go that route and eliminate yet another component from our shelf. Wait, maybe I'll just get the NS755V? Dangit. Too many choices. (5) pt hasn't returned my e-mails; I'm afraid I'm not going to see him until… I see him again.

Blue… No Yellow!

The built-in Ethernet jack on that Lindows machine seems to have shuffled off its mortal coil, so I'm using this alleged suicide as an excuse to throw Mandrake 9.1 on that baby. We'll see if I can bring the port back to life. Hey, if they can sell subscriptions to borrowing unlimited paperback novels (library, anyone?!), then certainly I (a lowly mortal) can perform such miracles. I gave up on trying to ressurect the built-in WiFi adapter on my test Toshiba. It loved Windows XP Home, but hated Pro. Don't ask me why – and also don't ask me why my handwriting font is now showing up darker than it had been. It's one of those mysteries of the universe – like… what color underwear do I have on right now?

Genius Blogs

I just started a new blogroll, and I'll add to it whenever I stumble upon a blog that's totally out-of-the-box. Today, my buddy David sent me a link to his latest creation: Legal MP3 Downloads. Totally, TOTALLY cool. I've got the 'roll' at the bottom of my sidebar – take a look and let me know what links are missing. My criteria: (1) Must run on blogging software; (2) Must have an RSS feed; (3) Must provide oustanding, original links or content; (4) Must be updated at least once every week, if not once a day.

In Need of Beta Clickers

Taking a cue from one of my snozberries (Marie), Jake and I decided to give Voidstar a whirl. After seeing semi-decent results, we decided to install the code on our Web server. The result: a Lockergnome Windows Daily RSS feed. It's pretty sloppy, but that's to be expected with such a reverse-engineered “hack.” Still, it works – and I'd love to hear your feedback on it (sans title syntax comments).
