Refrigerator Raider

The best part about staying up past my bedtime is being able to raid the fridge. And since I'm not a Mogwai, I can do it after Midnight, too. I was in denial for months, until Gretchen got the idea to install a hidden camera on the mayonnaise jar that hasn't been touched since 1964. Seeing is believing, although the entire experience has left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. Or perhaps that's the snack I just concocted?

Call for Comic Strips

What's your favorite section of the Sunday paper? If you're at all like me, you flip to the comics first. I can't think of a better content-type that's ripe for RSS. I scoured the Web to see which strips were supporting this rich syndication format. To my surprise, I found very few. Am I missing something here? Where are they? I don't want to subscribe to e-mail newsletters anymore. I don't wanna rely on unofficial workarounds. Have you found anything worth aggregating? UPDATE: Doctor Fun, Sev, Cox & Forkum, Dave Bort, Irregular Webcomic

Rush is an ID10T

And I quote: “The G5 is going to go to 64 bits, and it's going to change everything.” Excuse me, but what does this political pundit know about technology? Just because he can connect a USB cable to the back of his Mac doesn't mean he's qualified to tell me that a 64-bit hardware platform is going to change “everything.” It's a bullshit quote, and and I challenge him to tell me (and the rest of the world) WHY it's going to change “everything.” He makes it sound as though Apple has discovered fire or something. Please, Rush – you don't hear me talking about governmental policies that I don't understand. Methinks you've got a little PEBKAC going on.

World's Geekiest Fan

We've been experiencing a slight heat wave here in San Francisco. I begged and pleaded for Gretchen to buy us a fan, and she finally caved this afternoon and brought home the revolutionary Lasko Wind Tower. This thing has a remote control! As she set it up, I unpacked my iSight. That's right, I've got eyesight. And if you'd like to take your iChat AV beta for a spin and witness the tremendous picture quality of this FireWire Webcam, I'm lockergnome (at) [rhymes with ack] dot-com – and I'll be online pretty much all night.

Nice Segway

Several updates on the Gnomedex front. I've talked Phillip Torrone (book author and director of product development for Fallon Worldwide) into bringing a Segway Human Transporter for you to admire, VIA is running a contest to win an EPIA M10000 Mini-ITX mainboard, and the School of Metaphysics will be there, too. Don't ask. I just got off the phone with Sean and his gang, and we've got some good stuff cookin' with them. The Greater Des Moines Partnership is now officially a Premium sponsor, and Lindows is giving away a few accounts as prizes. I'm headed back to Iowa in a few weeks to drum up even more local support for our event. I'd like to hit capacity, but can only do that if you continue to help me spread the word.

FeedDemon Beta!

Are you ready to use the ultimate Windows desktop news aggregator? The time has come for you to download the FeedDemon Beta. I've been alpha testing it for weeks now and can honestly say that it's coming along very nicely. It won't hose your system, either. Give it a shot – especially if you're an RSS newbie.

Tablet Schmablet

At some point this evening, Robert will post a rebuttal to my earlier remark: “Are you holding out for a Tablet PC – possibly one of Redmond's biggest mistakes since Bob?” I just don't think they're worth the money. Let's take a laptop, make it (possibly) a little thinner, call it something else, and then jack up the price. Sure, it has on-screen stylus support – but so does my PDA. I believe the Tablet effort was doomed from the word Go, shadowed only by the impending death of Microsoft's Media Center Edition PC. To further prove my point, how many of you own either one of these products?!

/me Grins

From the JoiIto channel: “Someone just filed for a trademark on 'blog' in Japan.” I love chat rooms. Sure, I usually lurk in 'em, but boy – what a great place to pick up on conversations, gossip, and links.

Schweddy Balls

It's hotter than an oven in our apartment tonight. I've had to change my shirt four times since 10AM, dropping darn near 27 pounds of sweat throughout the day. The only thing keeping me cool is the new Google Toolbar. With a Popup Blocker: and AutoFill functionality, this is becoming even more of a “must have” app. I don't like how it pushes search terms to the right of my buttons, but that's only a minor bugaboo. I also ran NewsMonster through the wringer – and watched the latest Mozilla RC choke on it. There are only a few things keeping me from making 'the Moz' my default browser (support for ClearType fonts, opening '_blank' windows in a new tab, faster on-screen XUL performance, IE-styled CTRL+Enter functionality, better on-the-fly tab organization, better download manager, etc.). Good times. Good times.

ISO PowerToy Programmers

Here are a few utilities that I really, really, really need: (1) Font thumbnails directly in an Explorer Window or tooltip; (2) Image thumbnails on the desktop or tooltip; (3) A desktop newsticker app that reads RSS feeds; (4) A “Recently Used Programs” menu for people like me who use the Classic Start Menu; (5) A Watson for Windows; (6) A desktop television program guide with smart reminders (since Digiguide no longer supports the US market). Any takers? C'mon, here's a chance to show off your mad skillz – and I'll even help you market the damn thing(s).

The Linux Show

In another hour or so, I'll be a guest on The Linux Show. At 6PM PT, Kevin Hill, Arne Flones, Doc Searls, Russ Pavlicek AND Jeff Gerhardt are live. I'll be speaking on the death of e-mail marketing and then about Gnomedex. “This isn't a convention where you get lost in the hallways; it's a conference where you get lost in the conversations. Wither the walls that keep us from connecting with new folks and old friends; you've entered a live chat room, ready to listen to stories and solutions that continue to make the Web spin. Scheduled presentations will keep you captivated, and surrounding peers will keep you motivated.” Ask Doc – he was there last year.

My Next PDA

I know the galaxy is all aflutter over the countless Pocket PC announcements today, but I'm quite far from impressed. Why hasn't one company released a PDA that I want to use? The technology exists! I need: a thumb-driven keyboard, CF & SD media support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a built-in camera module – all sitting in a single device. Is that too much to ask for? I'm sure it won't come cheap, but consider what I'd have to buy to Frankenstein my own solution.

AL-TV Deleted Interview

It's time to give meaning to your boring, miserable life! You probably caught the recent airing of AL-TV on VH1. I was looking forward to it, too – until I realized that my interview was left to die on the cutting room floor. Never fear, faithful few – before the lawyers shut me down, I'm proud to present the lost interview to you. Maybe I'll be funny enough to work with him again at some point in the future? And maybe I'll join a league, enter a tournament, put on a stupid looking shirt, and go bowling instead.

12 Free CDs

Gretchen has somehow stockpiled twelve “free CD” certificates for her dedication to BMG's music service. The problem is: we don't know what to get. Carly Simon? Paul Simon? Billy Joel? Billy Idol? Billie Jean King? Billie Holiday? Holiday Music? The Sound of Music? No wonder she's never used these coupons. We saw Wicked this afternoon, but I don't think the soundtrack is available yet. Oh! They have John Tesh's “Forever More” album in stock. Why God, WHY?!
