Seeing as I don't pronounce my last name “jilman” there's no way I'll ever pronounce GIF “jif”. Oh and X-Files aside, the name Gillian bugs the hell out of me for similar reasons.
Hard G? Is that when you say GIF like “gift” but without the “t” on the end? Or is that when you say “Jif” like the peanut butter?
I am *so* not hooked on phonics right now! ;)
A brief history with GIF format. Compuserve invented the format in 1987. In their graphic display program called CompuShow the FAQ states that “The GIF (Graphics Interchange Format), pronounced 'JIF' was designed by CompuServe and the official specification released in June of 1987.” So its kinda confusing when the acronym was given and the G actually stands for a word with a hard G. Oh well its still no pants friday thats P as in *****
Whew, for a second I thought I was saying it incorrectly and wouldn't be able to download those mp3s, turns out I was right. ::quickly clicks the link saying “jif” to himself::
is it guh if GIF or juh if JIF ie the ***** butter uhh ****** uhh oops
Chris u totally reek of gnome ness guh knownme gee kahnowm
**** now im going to have to spend a week trying to fix my vocabulary :-p
I was about to say “like the peanut butter” then I read the title.
On another note, I'm doing the Love-in thing today: http://www.buccho.com/archives/000147.html#000147
Chris, you were the reason to watch CFH. Most of the things you featured and the questions you answered were remedial to me but, as a support person, it gave me a new perspective on how to reach my remote clients and communicate things to them in layman terms. I thank you and look forward to meeting you at GD3.
Gentle reader,
Just because the “G” (pronounced “jee”) in Graphical is hard, this doesn't mean the “G” in .gif is hard. Giraffe, gyp, generic, etc… Got to go grab gnomedex gear gnow.
I started out in the early nineties saying “jiff” and then over time (by 96 maybe) I switched to “giff”… I forgive myself, but I will be sad if U-R-L ever becomes “earl”… man that would suck. Saying a hard G seems to somehow wrangle an essence of Occam's razor. Why use a soft G, unless there was an explict reason?
Just because the inventors of the format can't spell doesn't mean I should give up all my years of training in english.
And to boot I'll be damned if I'm gonna be a walking advert for peanut butter. Not gonna happen.
Sorry but no, the answer is no. It is not jiffy pop either! Someone has to stand up to these fools!
Stop the press. to the best of my knowledge, gif stands for “Graphic Interchange Format” Now, adhering to the standard would say that GIF is in fact to be pronounced with a hard G.
Leo said it as “JIF” when he was mentioning the Mac animator program. It was Brian “The honorary Screen Saver” Stevens who blurbled through the GIF “JIF” thing that annoyed me the most.

choosy website designers choose GIF.
April Winchell multimedia rocks. I filled my hard drive with that stuff one fine evening. It's so choice.

My feelings as usual - we will pronounce the words any way we want. And I repeat, there are no American infidels in Baghdad. Never!

How do you pronounce Gnome? G-nome, J-nome. How about Gila Monster? I'm getting all goofed-up.

I'd given up trying to correct people on this one; even pointing them to URLs with C-Serve history, they didn't care.
Redemption!

Um, I don't care if they did invent it, Compuserve is wrong. The G in GRAPHICAL is hard, so the G in GIF is hard.
Thank you. :)

Thanks for the tips on “jifs”. That Brent Spiner track made me laugh so hard I nearly broke the furniture.
