RSS? OPML? ENT?

Mark pointed to Matt who's talking about a new module (ENT) for RSS 2.0. Sounds neat, but what I really need someone to do is evolve the spec for OPML. Instead of me having to re-categorize my feeds every time I install a new RSS parser, the OPML file should have pre-definied categories. And, instead of me having to maintain separate OPML files for all of my parsing applications, programmers should start enabling the user to dynamically load feeds from a centralized (local or remote) OPML file. C'mon folks - let's get smart with this stuff. I understand the need to maintain a proprietary database for the program in question, but your app shouldn't require me to maintain separate feed subscriptions. I'm not a programmer - I'm a user. And damnit, why can't “you” help make OPML smarter and more convenient for me?

Damb straight! I went through that particular hell a few weeks ago when I was searching for a better aggregator (settled on NewsGator, if anyone cares). OPML should be standardized *and* all aggregators should import/export it. (I was amazed how many don't.)

Not that I'm disagreeing with either of you but I think that there are two separate issues here perhaps.
What Matt and Paolo are thinking about (if I understand it correctly) is “this item in my blog belongs on this topic” as opposed to “this feed is for this topic” (i.e. post level versus aggregator level).
My read on this is that ENT is designed to help blogs become topical to amke the navigation and finding process easier.
I'm going to pass this on to him though so he can kick in some comments.

…and…um…yeah!

Well, I am lost as heck on this topic, umm oh I know! Nice shirt dude, that is the best I can do today!

And that aint working, thats the way you do it. Parse RSS on the OPML. I want my OPML says Chris. Give it to him, give it him.

Who's down with OPML?
Yeah you know me!

hi… ****stage***** woooooo hoooooo….. this site is weiiirrrrddddddd ooooooo man, me hurting for caffeeeeennnnneeeee. fooooo foooooood. SODA, Coffee!!!! ahhhh

For some reason I cannot get a RSS feed to work on my site, thats kinda weird. Any suggestions?

Hi there,
Just following up on what Scott said, ENT is definitely a way to categorize your feed at the *item* level. I.e. you attach topics to an item so that it can be separated from the feed.
However in relation to what Chris was talking about, one of the side-effects of the widespread use of ENT would be that you could categorize you subscription list automatically by analysing the topics used (long term) by each feed.
Regards,
Matt
p.s. The URL for the ENT spec should be http://www.purl.org/NET/ENT/1.0/

it's like weirdooooo man!!!
Chris where was that shirt when you were doinf CFH.

I hear ya!
I've been swapping aggregators a bit and its always a bit of a gamble as to whether it will import the OPML properly or not. Annoying!

Is that a monkey on the netcam??

I have no idea what any of that means but I'll nod and agree anyways.
*nods* yeah

Back in 1993, I wrote up an idea concerning virtual newsgroups (on the user level)… the idea occurred to me because there was such a proliferation of newsgroups to subscribe to..
Fast forwarding to now, I have a concern that Topics or using any one master list of Categories isn't going to cut it on a large scale.. everyone has a slightly different idea of how to organize things.
Is there such a thing as “self organizing categories from keywords”? See the post on my site (JavaJoint.com) “Topics, Categories, Keywords, and Konfusion”

I hear you, brother!! I feel the same way everytime I bake one of my delicious apple-crust waffle pies. Those parsers are murder! I too wish Opey was smarter!

Speaking of XML, it would be sooooo wonderful if yours was upgraded to the 2.0 templates that DiveIntoMark offers - so we can follow links in the readers instead of adding to your bandwidth by hitting your site over & over again just to get the links for other sites… *sigh*

I'm new to the whole RSS craze, but my site is syndicated through Movable Type so I haven't had to code anything. I'm sorry to know that it isn't seamless.

Yo, email me your OPML file. I'll use it as the template for my RSS feed importer. We gotta talk tomorrow too. I was feeling like so much ass today.

Parsing sounds like something you should do with a salad.

What Do You Think?
