Tim—there aren't any trees, hardly, that's the sad part!! :(
Hey Tony: If you're concerned about safety, I'd advise against the Tenderloin, most of South of Market (including the part where we live, yeccchh, unless you want kickass access to transportation), ummmmm… parts of the Mission, too. I think parts of the southeast and southern parts of the city have some fairly high crime stats, but can have cheaper places to live, and that side of the city (on the bay side) definitely has more sun than the ocean side. Apparently the Haight area is not a good place to be after dark, either.
If you have some places in mind, you can e-mail me (gretchen@pirillo.com) to ask what we think of them, though we are experts by no means. It all depends on your situation: will you have a car, is money your big factor, do you have a lot of stuff, a need to be close to work, a desire to spend very little of your day commuting, do you need sun or not, etc.
Meryl,
These shots were taken from the Upper Market/Castro area… a truly BEAUTIFUL, homey area if you can afford it as well as deal with hellish hills!
I'd recommend the HI San Francisco hostel (http://www.norcalhostels.org/) in Fort Mason. But make sure you book well in advance. Better yet, stay at the free campground across the bridge.

I'll be moving in the next couple of months -what are some areas of the city TO AVOID? It's just me so I don't need a big apartment or anything…

Reminds me of the beginning of “Full House.” Ahhh, I love that show. Bob Saget is my hero.

Hey this is great. I'll be in SF in about three weeks. I'll stay at a youth hostel, dunno which one yet. Anyone know if the Adelaide hostel is ok?
